Candidates and politicians are fair game, but their family members — especially young children — are not.

Apparently even the daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton knows this fundamental political rule, and the eldest son of President Donald Trump thanked her for it. Donald Trump, Jr. tweeted, “On this we can agree,” to Chelsea Clinton earlier this month after the former first daughter defended his youngest brother, Barron.

Joke in bad taste
At issue was a joke posted on social media by a well-known comedian. The Washington Examiner reported:

[Chelsea] Clinton on Tuesday issued a stinging rebuke of Zack Bornstein, a former Saturday Night Live and Jimmy Kimmel Live! writer, following a joke he made in a now-deleted tweet that Barron Trump had been “recast” as First Lady Melania Trump’s State of the Union guest, Preston Sharp.

Chelsea Clinton came to 11-year-old Barron Trump’s defense, and addressed the reason Sharp was the first lady’s guest as well.

Clinton tweeted:

Chelsea Clinton
Whatever our politics, I hope we can agree to both leave 11-year old private citizen Barron Trump alone and celebrate 12-year old Preston Sharp for his work to honor the graves of every military veteran. And putting aside the political differences between the Trumps and the Clintons, Donald Trump, Jr. acknowledged Chelsea’s kind words. He tweeted:

He saw a need
On Memorial Day, when Preston Sharpe was just 10 years old, he visited his grandfather’s grave to place flowers and an American flag upon it in recognition for his service in the U.S. Navy. He was saddened to discover that many other grave sites of fallen veterans remained bare, and he complained about it to his mother, April Sharp.

“You can’t complain about something unless you try to do something about it,” she advised her son.

So with his mother’s help, Sharp established a GoFundMe page to raise funds to honor all veterans. According to his mother:

So far Preston has met his goals of honoring veterans in Redding, Shasta County and he fulfilled his goal of reaching Sacramento during the summer of 2017.  For his goal of honoring veterans in all 50 states he has visited cemeteries in California, Nevada, Oregon, Virginia and Florida.  As of January 2018, Preston has organized the placement of over 40,000 US flags and artificial red carnations at veteran’s gravesites.

The first lady chose to reward Sharp’s actions by making him an honored guest at her husband’s first state of the union, prompting jokes from comedians like Bornstein who noted that Donald and Melania Trump’s only son, Barron, was not present at the speech.

Previous attacks on Barron
This isn’t the first time the president’s youngest son has been mocked. When comedian Kathy Griffin was pictured holding what appeared to be the severed head of President Trump, Barron reportedly was confused and upset.

This prompted Ken Jennings, Jeopardy!‘s longest-winning contestant, to poke fun at the 11-year-old first son.

“Barron Trump saw a very long necktie on a heap of expired deli meat in a dumpster,” Jennings tweeted. “He thought it was his dad & his little heart is breaking.”

Jennings has never taken his tweet down.

In another incident, comedienne Rosie O’Donnell claimed that Barron Trump suffered from autism. She later apologized for this misstep.

At least Chelsea Clinton understands it — children should be off limits from political slander. That’s one thing we can all agree on
