While former President Barack Obama liked to claim that no foreign terror attacks happened on U.S. soil during his entire 8-year tenure, the truth is that when they did happen, he called them workplace violence or some other phrase meant to hide what they really were.

Now that pattern is repeating itself at the local and state level, in the wake of a disturbing attack that can only be called terrorism–unless you’re in Minnesota. Truza Jamal Hassan set eight fires in seven buildings on a St. Paul, MN college campus last week—targeting a daycare among other locations — in retaliation for American military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In the wake of the attack, school administrators and the media closed ranks and sought to minimize the terror angle.

A Rose By Any Other Name
Hassan, 19, spent last Wednesday setting fires at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, mostly in bathroom trash cans. The fires were set in a residential dormitory, fitness center, and other places on campus, including a child care center.

Hassan was caught about 2 hours after the fires started, and freely told investigators that she set the fires. She complained that her arson efforts were “not as successful” as she’d hoped. According to investigators “she wanted the school to burn to the ground and that her intention was to hurt people.”

Powerline noted:

Hassan is a hard, hard case. She set one fire at St. Mary Hall, the school’s largest dorm. It houses first-year students (welcome to St. Kate’s!) and the Early Childhood Center, a day care facility. Hassan appears to have included St. Mary Hall on her rampage because of the day care facility. Thirty-three children and eight adults were at a day care in the building at the time, along with 10 to 15 students who were also evacuated.

The woman also wrote a letter to her roommates that discussed “bringing back the Islamic Caliphate.” Her roommates turned the letter over to police.

Hassan was defiant, telling investigators that “you guys are lucky that I don’t know how to build a bomb because I would have done that.”

Appearing in Ramsey County District Court last week on a charge of first-degree arson, Hassan wore a makeshift niqab that covered all but her eyes.

The Elephant in the Room
The media refuses to address the obvious, calling Hassan “a Minnesota woman” and steadfastly refusing to reveal either her nationality or her status as an immigrant.

According to Powerline Blog, Hassan attended good schools since her arrival in Minnesota, and was a student at St. Kate’s prior to her attack on the campus.

Bail for the Hassan is set at $100,000, and she was ordered to stay away from the campus and surrender her passport. Her family was planning a vacation to Ethiopia but Hassan is not allowed to leave the country.

Daniel Greenfield points out that the college’s blog has 66 social justice entries, meaning the school won’t address the obvious either. In fact, the school president’s statement focused on the fact that the college “deeply value[s] all Muslim members” at the campus.

That’s a laudable sentiment on its own, but as a response to a potentially deadly act of campus violence, it leaves something to be desired. The entire statement comprises three paragraphs, none of which mention the arsonists actual motive, and none of which mention any steps being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.

It’s possible to deeply value Muslim students and faculty, while still acknowledging the motivations of those who would threaten the lives and safety of everyone on campus and taking steps to avoid future attacks. Unfortunately, it appears that the school, like most of the left wing in American politics, is more interested in political correctness than protecting citizens from attack.
