Earthquake swarm in Iceland intensifies, 2000 earthquakes in four days

Earthquake swarm in Iceland intensifies, 2000 earthquakes in four days
People are constantly being shaken awake on Grimsey Island, in North Iceland. A Magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit around 5:30 this morning. One hour later a Magnitude 4.5 quake hit the same region, which is under high seismic activity with more than 2,000 earthquakes detected since February 14th. Both tremblors, as well as more than 6 aftershocks,
were felt by residents of the island. This is not the first swarm to occur in the area, though such an active one has not occurred since 1988, nearly 30 years ago.  A lot of tension has accumulated around Grimsey Island because it has been a long time since there was a big earthquake there. People have begun to think that there could be a big earthquake on the way. Second earthquake in three days shakes Southern Mexico
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck southern Mexico early on Monday, sending frightened residents into the streets as seismic alarms echoed across the capital, although there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake hit 32 km (20 miles) east of Santa Catarina Mechoacan in the state of Oaxaca at a depth of 40 km at 12.57am (6.57am GMT), the US Geological Survey said, revising its strength down slightly from an initial 6.1 magnitude.
The tremor was strong enough to trigger earthquake alarms in Mexico City, more than 200 miles (320 km) away, but was shorter and less intense than one of Friday in the same area that damaged about 1,000 houses. Many in Mexico City slept through the shaking. Residents who rushed into the streets when the alarms sounded quickly returned to their homes once the quake stopped. The head of Mexico’s civil protection agency, Luis Felipe Puente, said state emergency procedures had been activated in the affected states.

Alaska earthquake sparks fears for countries along Ring of Fire

Alaska earthquake sparks fears for countries along Ring of Fire
Earthquakes in Alaska, Indonesia and Hawaii and volcanoes in Japan and the Philippines have sparked panic across the Pacific Ring of Fire today, with volcanically and geologically active areas on alert.  A huge 7.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska early this morning, sparking tsunami warnings and watches along the entire west coast of Canada, the United States and parts of Mexico. Indonesia was rocked by a 5.3 quake, with at least 130 buildings damaged and several people injured, while thousands of people were evacuated from areas surrounding volcanoes in Japan and the Philippines.
One person died in Japan as the Kusatsu-Shirane volcano triggered an avalanche at a ski resort. The victim was a soldier training in the area when the volcano erupted. It is unknown whether he was killed in the avalanche or after being hit by large rocks which shot out of the volcano, which seriously injured five others. The volatility on the Pacific Ring of Fire today has increased fears for the Big One: a major earthquake in a highly-populated area on the US west coast.

DEVELOPING: Earthquake swarm in progress along the coast of Australia
Jan 24, 2018 | 0  |
DEVELOPING: Earthquake swarm in progress along the coast of Australia
A seismic swarm is in progress along the coast of northern New South Wales, Australia since Friday, January 19, 2018, raising fears that a bigger earthquake might hit the region. Authorities say that while they can’t rule out a bigger one, they don’t see it likely. From 22:50 UTC on January 19 to 08:08 UTC on January 24, Geoscience Australia registered a total of 21 earthquakes along the coast of NSW, between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, with magnitudes ranging from 1.8 to 4.2 and depths up to 10 km (6.2 miles).
The strongest so far was M4.2 at a depth of 10 km with epicenter located just off the coast of Nambucca Heads. The quake hit at 02:28 UTC on January 24 (13:28 local time). There are no reports of injuries and no threat of a tsunami. Locals reported minor damage (cracked walls) and said the shaking lasted between 10 and 15 seconds. “It’s not unusual to get a swarm of earthquakes when stresses exceed the strength of the rock,” Geoscience Australia said, adding that they continue to receive felt reports from Scott’s Heads (south of M4.2 earthquake). These, however, are too small and cannot be located accurately by our instruments, the agency added.

DEVELOPING: More earthquakes strike along Ring of Fire as seismic surge continues

DEVELOPING: More earthquakes strike along Ring of Fire as seismic surge continues
More earthquakes have hit along the Ring of Fire – and there may be hundreds more to come. In the last few days, earthquakes have also brought terror to Alaska, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Indonesia, Hawaii and Chile while Japan has seen the spectacular eruption of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane – all of which are on the terrifying Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is the largest and most active fault line in the world, stretching from New Zealand, all around the east coast of Asia, over to Canada and the USA and all the way down to the southern tip of South America.
And in the last 24 hours, scores more earthquakes have hit the zone. Chile was hit by a strong 5.4 magnitude tremor at 7.45 GMT, while California and Alaska have also been struck since midnight. As a result of the non-stop activity experts are worried something unusual is happening. Meteorologist for Fox News, Dan Amarante, posted on Twitter: “Boy, it’s been an active few days in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Another fairly strong earthquake, this time just off the coast of northern Japan.”

78 quakes reported near Kodiak after powerful Earthquake strikes off coast of Alaska

78 quakes reported near Kodiak after powerful Earthquake strikes off coast of Alaska
The 7.9 magnitude Alaska earthquake has been followed by 78 large aftershocks in a surge of seismic activity along the Ring of Fire. According to United States Geological Survey (USGS) data, more than 70 smaller tremors have rocked the Gulf of Alaska in the hours since yesterday’s quake, which was the joint seventh-largest earthquake ever recorded in the region.
The first major aftershocks came just 15 minutes after the 7.9-quake struck at 12.31am local time (9.31am GMT) on Tuesday, with the largest measuring 5.6 on the moment magnitude scale. Most of the tremors that followed were recorded in the same localized area but are unlikely to have been felt by humans because of the area’s distance to any populated areas. The vast majority of the tremors that followed measured between 2.5 and 4.5 on the Richter scale.

Man from Netherlands Warns of Coming “Megaquake” to Strike West Coast in March

Man from Netherlands Warns of Coming “Megaquake” to Strike West Coast in March
ATTENTION: The following report does not reflect the views or opinions of ETH
The magnitude 8 earthquake which struck off the coast of Alaska today is just the start of a huge seismic shift that will hit the west coast of the US in coming weeks, a self-styled prophet has warned.  Frank Hoogerbeets, based in the Netherlands, claims to be able to predict when earthquakes will happen based on the alignments of planets in our solar system.
Alaska has been hit by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake, sparking a tsunami warning across the entire US west coast and Canada as mass tremors along the Ring of Fire increased dramatically in the last 24 hours. Mr Hoogerbeets claims it was a precursor for a Big One along the west coast US, that he has been warning of. He told Express.co.uk: “The large earthquake in the Gulf of Alaska was anticipated, but occurred a bit sooner than expected.

Japan Struck by 6.2 Earthquake off Coast of Honshu, Ring Of Fire Continues To Reel

Japan Struck by 6.2 Earthquake off Coast of Honshu, Ring Of Fire Continues To Reel
A day after a massive earthquake near Alaska sparked tsunami alerts for the U.S. West Coast, a magnitude 6.2 quake was reported early Wednesday off the coast of Japan, officials said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 9:50 p.m. local time about 64 miles northeast of the island of Honshu, at a depth of about 24 miles. The temblor on Wednesday was much deeper and weaker than the one off the coast of Alaska.
No tsunami watches or warnings were issued from the Japan quake, and there were no immediate reports of injuries. It was just the latest spark of activity this week along the volatile “Ring of Fire” seismic fault system. More than half the world’s active volcanoes located above ground are in this ring, according to the USGS. The region is the location of most of Earth’s subduction zones, where oceanic plates slide under the lighter continental plates.

ALERT: Pacific “Ring Of Fire” Unleashing More Earthquakes
Two more earthquakes shook southern Mexico Saturday, further rattling a country still coming to grips with the devastation from stronger temblors earlier this month. Meanwhile, Californians are anxious about a possible Big One, because of the recent major quakes – all seemingly hitting in the “ring of fire,” where about 90 percent of seismic activity occurs. A 6.1-magnitude Mexico earthquake Saturday morning was centered in Oaxaca state near Matias Romero, a town about 275 miles southeast of Mexico

City, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Roughly speaking, the epicenter was between the centers of this month’s two more violent earthquakes – the 7.1 magnitude temblor that hit Tuesday closer to the capital, and the 8.1 magnitude quake that struck Sept. 8 off the southern Pacific coast, near Chiapas state. Another 4.5-magnitude quake hit Oaxaca at 7:06 p.m. Eastern. That temblor occurred at a depth of 8.9 kilometers, according to initial readings by USGS.

A 6.1-magnitude Mexico earthquake Saturday morning was centered in Oaxaca state near Matias Romero, a town about 275 miles southeast of Mexico City, the U.S.

In Oaxaca, some highways and a bridge that had been damaged during the Sept. 8 earthquake collapsed, Mexico’s federal police said.

Mexico City did not appear to have sustained significant damage in the earlier and stronger of Saturday’s two quakes, said the country’s office of the secretary of public security.

Warning sirens sounded in Mexico City after the morning quake was detected, interrupting rescue operations at some of the dozens of buildings that collapsed from Tuesday’s earthquake.

At least 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes hit in the so-called “ring of fire” stretching from New Zealand to Chile through Asia and toward the Americas.

And the chances of California experiencing a major earthquake has peaked, say researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tom Jordan, director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, said: “We know that tectonic forces are continually tightening the springs of the San Andreas fault system, making big quakes inevitable. We are fortunate that seismic activity in California has been relatively low over the past century.”

Researchers scoured through the latest data from the state’s active geological faults to determine the likelihood of an earthquake there.

Their findings showed the probability that California will experience a magnitude 8 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years has increased from about 4.7 percent to about 7 percent.

ring-of-fire

Fears are growing in the wake of a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hitting New Zealand Wednesday as it caused tremors off the coast of Japan and Indonesia. California is located in the same path.

It comes as Mexico continues to battle to rescue survivors from toppled buildings after its devastating 7.1-magnitude quake Tuesday killed 230 people.

Seismologists are concerned that there has been an unusually high amount of activity along the fault in the past week. One scientist branded the activity “unusual.”

“Earthquakes in California and Mexico differ in ways that are important to understand – if we are to learn lessons that allow us to better prepare for them in the future,” said seismologist Jean-Paul Ampuero, a professor in the Seismological Laboratory at CalTech. “First, the tectonic activity in each area is different: California sits at the boundary between two plates that rub each other horizontally. The plates off the shore of Mexico and the rest of the Pacific ‘ring of fire,’ an area of intense seismic activity, rub against each other vertically. As a result, Mexico has bigger earthquakes. The biggest Mexican earthquakes happen offshore and create tsunamis, but the earthquakes themselves are far from Mexico City.”

The biggest Californian earthquakes happen inland on the San Andreas Fault, he said, and as a result generate no tsunami.

“Though they are smaller than earthquakes like the one we are seeing cause such devastation in Mexico, they occur dangerously close to Los Angeles.”
