DEVELOPING: Trump Reportedly Considering Huge White House Shake-Up
MAY 14, 2017
President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a massive White House shake-up that could end with the president firing many of his top advisers, including Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.
In an article published Sunday morning for Axios, Andrew Harnik wrote that he’s been told by “White House sources” Trump’s frustration with his staff is ready to boil over and that a “huge reboot” could occur soon.
“He’s frustrated, and angry at everyone,” said one of the unnamed sources to Harnik.
The genesis of the potential “reboot” is said to come from some of Trump’s trusted friends and advisers outside the White House.
“The advice he’s getting is to go big—that he has nothing to lose,” a source told Harnik. “The question now is how big and how bold. I’m not sure he knows the answer to that yet.”
According to Harnik, it’s unlikely Trump would consider replacing any of his Cabinet members, but White House staff—including Priebus, chief strategist Steve Bannon, press secretary Sean Spicer and counsel Don McGahn—are all potentially on the chopping block.
The Associated Press reported on Sunday Trump has become incredibly distrustful of many of his top advisers and now relies heavily on “a handful of family members and longtime aides,” especially Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner.
Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey could confirm the veracity of the reports. AP reports many of Trump’s top White House advisers weren’t consulted prior to Comey being fired. Three “officials” reportedly told AP Bannon found out about Comey on television, although “a person close to Bannon disputed that characterization.”
AP also reported Trump is unhappy with how his communications team handled the Comey backlash, although reports suggest they learned of the decision just hours before it was announced.
In a story published by the Washington Post on Saturday, Newsmax chief Christopher Ruddy, a Trump “confidant,” was quoted as saying when Trump “sees failure, he quickly adapts.”
“This was the first major crisis or test they’ve had, and it looks like a lot of systems failed,” Ruddy said. “My experience with the president is when he sees failure, he quickly adapts and tries new things. He’s not a guy that keeps the same ol’.”
