In an operation in the West Bank city of Jenin early Thursday morning, Israeli special forces killed a Palestinian terrorist believed behind the murder last week of Israeli rabbi and father-of-six, Raziel Shevach. A second suspect in the murder was arrested, security officials said.

An elite Border Police unit was searching for Shevach’s killers when troops came under fire, leaving two officers injured, police said early Thursday.

“Two officers from the counter terror unit were injured. One seriously and the second lightly, both were taken to hospital for treatment,” according to police.

Information about the Israeli injuries had been held under a gag order until their families were notified.

In the Jenin firefight, Israeli forces killed one Palestinian terrorist, captured another and were still in pursuit of a third, a Border Police spokesman told The Times of Israel.

Hours later, the spokesman said the forces were still scanning the area for the third terrorist and that the operation was still ongoing.

The Palestinian health ministry initially named the dead man as Ahmed Jarrar, 22. Palestinian media said he was the son of a senior Hamas military wing member Nasser Jarrar, who was killed by Israeli forces 16 years ago during the Second Intifada. But the Palestinian health ministry issued a correction midday Thursday, saying Ahmad Ismail Muhammad Jarrar, 31, was the Palestinian killed by Israeli forces overnight in a Jenin firefight.

During the operation, the army said a violent riot broke out in the northern West Bank city. Palestinians hurled IEDs, rocks and fired at the forces, who responded with riot-dispersal measures, including live fire, the army said in a statement.

Palestinian media also reported military bulldozers demolishing a building in the city.

“As part of the operational activities, troops were reinforced, check-posts were placed and searches and arrests were conducted —  all in parallel to wide and significant intelligence activity of the Shin Bet and IDF,” the army said.

The terrorists were believed to be members of the cell that gunned down Shevach on January 9 in the northern West Bank.

The Haaretz daily said that there had been a significant development in recent days that led the Shin Bet Security Service to shift the focus of their searches from the Nablus area, where the drive-by shooting occurred, to the Jenin area.

Israeli forces have been carrying out relentless searches for the killers since the January 9 terror attack. The IDF believes the attack was carried out by a cell consisting of at least two terrorists.

In a rare move, the Hamas terrorist group’s military wing had released a statement praising the attack, calling it “heroic” and a sign of future attacks to come, though the organization did not take responsibility for the shooting.

“The attack outside Nablus is the first real response to show the leaders of the enemies and those that are behind them (the United States), that things that you fear — are coming,” Hamas said in a statement earlier this month.

Shortly before 8:00 p.m. on January 9, 35-year-old father of six Shevach was driving in his car on the highway near his home in the Havat Gilad outpost when shots were fired at him from a passing car.

Shevach was shot in the neck, but managed to call his wife and tell her to call an ambulance.

He died of his injuries at a Kfar Saba hospital after receiving initial treatment by medics at the scene of the attack, the Havat Gilad Junction. Medics said he suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body and his condition deteriorated as he was taken to the hospital.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip — A Palestinian family said it had killed one of its members Friday after Gaza’s Hamas rulers said he aided Israel in killing three of the terrorist group’s commanders.

The family said in a statement that a relative shot Ahmed Barhoum dead, but did not say which family member pulled the trigger. It said they followed developments in the Hamas investigation and believed their son was guilty.

The family noted the relative was arrested and interrogated by the “resistance,” meaning he was detained outside the Palestinian litigation system. There was no immediate statement from Hamas.

The Hamas commanders were killed near the end of the 50-day war with Israel in 2014 during an airstrike on a house.

Hamas has executed dozens of Palestinians for collaboration since seizing Gaza in 2007.

Israeli forces raided the West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday and engaged in a firefight with Palestinian gunmen after the IDF commandos came under fire, police and Palestinian media reported. At least one Palestinian was killed and several people were reported injured.

An elite Border Police unit was fired upon during security operations in the city and clashed with “terrorists,” the police said in a statement.

“In the gun battle that took place there are a number of injuries,” a police statement said. All further details were placed under a gag order including the identity of those injured.

Palestinian media reported that at least one of the Palestinians were killed and another injured.

The clashes come amid tensions in the West Bank following the killing earlier in the month of an Israeli rabbi who was shot dead while driving down a highway outside Nablus.

Israeli forces have been carrying out searches for the killers. The IDF believes the attack was carried out by a cell of at least two terrorists.

In a rare move, the Hamas terrorist group’s military wing released a statement praising the attack, calling it “heroic” and a sign of future attacks to come, though the organization did not take responsibility for the shooting.

Netanyahu ‘confident’ US embassy will move to Jerusalem within a year

In comments to reporters in India, PM also praises Trump for 'challenging' UNRWA and taking a tougher stance on Iran

AHMEDABAD, India — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday praised a series of recent moves by US President Donald Trump and expressed confidence that the US would relocate its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem within a year.

“My confident assessment is that it will move much faster than people think, within a year from today,” he told Israeli reporters on a flight from New Delhi to Gujarat during a state visit to India.

Get The Times of Israel's Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories FREE SIGN UP
Last month, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that relocating the embassy to Jerusalem would likely take at least three years, and quite possibly longer. “It’s not going to be anything that happens right away,” he said in a speech at the State Department reported by The New York Times. “Probably no earlier than three years out, and that’s pretty ambitious.”

Trump promised to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a December 6 speech at the White House in which he also formally recognized the city as Israel’s capital.

Trump’s controversial decision sparked protests in some countries and was rejected in a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution. The recognition was welcomed in Israel, and Guatemala has since announced it will follow the US in moving its embassy to the city. Arab foreign ministers are set to meet on February 1 in Cairo to discuss steps against Trump’s recognition, the Arab League said earlier this month.

Netanyahu also lauded the Trump administration as the first to “challenge” the UN aid agency to the Palestinians. A day earlier, the US had announced it would withhold $65 million of a $120 million contribution to UNRWA this month.

The US decision “is the first time that there is a challenge to UNRWA, after 70 years. The agency that perpetuates the Palestinian refugee problem and narrative of erasing Zionism – and this is the first time this thing is challenged. It’s a good thing that they’re moving forward and challenging this body.”

Netanyahu reiterated his view that aid to the Palestinians should pass through the UN’s main refugee body, UNHCR, rather than UNRWA, and said he had suggested to the administration that it divert its contributions.

Israel accuses UNRWA of helping to perpetuate the Palestinian narrative of Israel’s illegitimacy by granting refugee status to the descendants of refugees, even when they are born in other countries and have citizenship there, conditions that do not apply to the refugees cared for by UNHCR. The population of Palestinian refugees thus grows each year, even as other refugee populations in the world shrink with each passing generation.

UNRWA counters that it is caring for a population that is scattered in several countries in the region, but is not served either by Israel or those countries, which refuse to grant them or their descendants citizenship, and that its definition of refugees reflects that reality.

The US notified UNRWA of the cut in a letter Tuesday from the State Department that also made clear that future US donations will be contingent on major changes by UNRWA.

“We would like to see some reforms be made,” said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, adding that changes were needed in the way the agency operates and is funded. “This is not aimed at punishing anyone.”

The US donated $355 million to UNWRA in 2016 and was set to make a similar contribution in this year, with the first installment to have been sent this month. But after a highly critical January 2 tweet from Trump on aid to the Palestinians, the State Department opted to wait for a formal policy decision before sending its first installment.

Trump’s tweet expressed frustration over the lack of progress in his attempts to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and he pointed the finger at the Palestinians. “We pay the Palestinians HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect,” he said. “But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”

Nauert said the United States believes there needs to be more “burden-sharing,” a regular Trump complaint about multilateral organizations dependent on significant contributions of US cash.

“We don’t believe that taking care of other nations and other people have to be solely the United States’ responsibility,” she said.

In his comments to reporters, Netanyahu also praised the Trump administration’s position on the Iranian nuclear deal. The US president said last week that he would not recertify the pact again unless its terms were changed. Israel has been the most vociferous critic of the agreement since before its signing, and has welcomed the administration’s skepticism.

“Three things are happening in the United States that never happened before,” Netanyahu said. Besides the cut to UNRWA and the Jerusalem embassy shifts, “there is a dramatic change toward Iran. The president gave a time limit for the necessary change in attitude to the nuclear program. Be assured this is going to happen. He’s the one talking about canceling the deal.”

Times of Israel staff and agencies contributed to this report.

Bitter Abbas to Trump: We reject your peace ‘deal of the century’

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday said a peace plan being worked on by US President Donald Trump insulted the Palestinians, calling it a slap in the face, and said the Palestinians would not accept any part of it.

“We told Trump we will not accept his project, the ‘deal of the century,’ which has become the ‘slap of the century,’” said Abbas, expressing Palestinian anger over the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“We do not take instructions from anyone, and say ‘no’ to anyone if it is about our destiny, our cause, our country and our people… 1,000 times no,'” he said, opening a meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Central Council in Ramallah.

The meeting, the first in two years, was called to discuss the Palestinian reaction to Trump’s December 6 speech recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in which the US president said his decision merely recognized the reality that Jerusalem already serves as Israel’s capital and was not meant to prejudge the final borders of the city.

After the Trump declaration, Abbas declared that the US could no longer serve as a peacebroker, and instituted a boycott of the Trump administration, canceling a planned meeting with US Vice President Mike Pence and refusing to meet with US peace envoy Jason Greenblatt.

Trump’s move was hailed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and by leaders across much of the Israeli political spectrum, while enraging Palestinians and prompting condemnations worldwide.

Abbas also said on Sunday that Israel had “ended” the landmark Oslo peace accords of the 1990s with its actions.

“I am saying that Oslo, there is no Oslo,” he said at the start of the meeting. “Israel ended Oslo,” Abbas said, adding that the meeting must take decisions on how to move forward.

Abbas had long defended the need to preserve the Oslo Accords, arguing it allowed for the return of Palestinian leaders in exile and the creation of the Palestinian Authority.

At the same time, Abbas has also threatened a number of times to walk away from the agreements signed during Oslo.

Abbas, in his speech on Sunday, also seemingly confirmed that US officials offered Palestinians the Jerusalem suburb of Abu Dis as the capital of a future Palestinian state, rather than their sought-after East Jerusalem capital.

Abbas said Abu Dis was “being offered,” though he did not specify that it was by the Americans.

In December, a number of reports said that when Abbas had visited Saudi Arabia in September, the Saudis informed him of the outlines of a peace plan being drawn up by the Trump administration.

Among the elements of the Saudi proposal outlined in the reports was the establishment of the capital of a future Palestinian state in Abu Dis, a suburb of Jerusalem in the West Bank, east of Israel’s security barrier.
Abu Dis (Miriam Alster/Flash90)
In early peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians in the ’90s, the idea of Abu Dis as a Palestinian capital was floated, though it was ultimately rejected.

In 1995, the PA began building its parliament in Abu Dis, but eventually eschewed the massive complex for a location in Ramallah.

The PCC meeting, which is set to finish on Monday night, is meant to chart a new course for the Palestinian national movement.

The Israeli army on Wednesday expanded its manhunt for the perpetrators of a terror attack the night before in which an Israeli man was shot dead in his car on a highway in the northern West Bank.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, 35-year-old father of six Rabbi Raziel Shevach was driving in his car on the highway near his home in the Havat Gilad outpost when shots were fired at him from a passing car.

Shevach, a volunteer medic, was shot in the neck, but managed to call his wife and tell her to call an ambulance. Civilian and military medics rushed to the scene and tried to stop the bleeding as they took him to Kfar Saba’s Meir Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts failed.

Immediately following the attack, troops launched a manhunt, setting up roadblocks in the area around the Palestinian city of Nablus as they looked for the perpetrators.

“A number of actions were decided upon in order to locate the terrorists who committed the shooting attack, including security checks upon entrances and exits to and from the city of Nablus and placing forces and security crossings across the city,” the army said late Tuesday night.

“Additional forces were called to the scene in order to complete missions in the area,” the military said in a statement.

Overnight, Israeli special forces joined the search, entering nearby Palestinian villages in order to locate the attackers.

On Wednesday morning, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot toured the area of the attack, and the army announced it was expanding its search and bringing in reinforcements to assist in the effort.

During his visit to the area, Eisenkot spoke with the head of the army’s Central Command, Maj. Gen. Roni Numa; the head of the Judea and Samaria Division, Brig. Gen. Eran Niv; and the head of the Samaria Brigade, Col. Gilad Amit.

“The main mission at the moment is to locate the cell, to stop it and to prevent further terror events, and also to prepare for further activity in the area over the weekend,” Eisenkot said.

The military set up checkpoints at the entrance to Nablus, which has a population of over 150,000, and in the surrounding villages, in what the army often refers to as a “breathing closure.”

“Entrances and exits to and from the villages surrounding Nablus will be possible only after security checks,” the army said.

Palestinian media reported traffic jams across the northern West Bank in light of the closures, especially at the entrances to Nablus.

Later on Wednesday morning, some of the checkpoints around Nablus were taken down.

During Eisenkot’s visit to the area, a local settler activist shouted at him, asking why the army had removed some of the blockades.

“Why did you take down the roadblocks? Mister chief of staff, why did you take down the roadblocks?” asked the activist, Tzvi Sukkot, before Eisenkot’s bodyguards asked him to leave.

Sukkot, a resident of the nearby Yitzhar settlement, also told the army chief that settlers in the area had earlier in the week informed the military of an apparent attempted shooting attack in the area.

On Monday, Sukkot wrote on Facebook that a Yitzhar resident had been driving in his car when a vehicle pulled up next to him and the driver pulled out what appeared to be a pistol, but for some reason did not open fire.

“Why do we have to warn you? Why do we have to warn you again and again?” he shouted at the army chief.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted that “security forces will do everything possible in order to reach the foul murderer, and the State of Israel will bring him to justice.”

Following the shooting attack, on Tuesday night, several incidents of settler violence were reported in the West Bank, in apparent retaliation for Shevach’s death.

Palestinian cars were pelted with rocks near the Yitzhar and Shiloh junctions south of Nablus, Channel 10 news reported.

Additional stone-throwing incidents were reported in the nearby villages of Asira al-Qibliya, Jalud and Burin. Four people were lightly wounded by the rocks, Palestinians said.

The IDF said it was aware of rock-throwing incidents and that soldiers had dispersed the attackers. There were no arrests reported.

In a tweet, MK Bezalel Smotrich, of the right-wing Jewish Home party, said that “if they don’t want the grieving public to take the law into its own hands, then the system needs to do something” about Palestinian violence.

Shevach’s funeral will be held at the Havat Gilad outpost at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Havat Gilad is an illegal outpost established in 2002 in memory of Gilad Zar, security coordinator of the Shomron Regional Council, who was shot and killed a year prior in the northern West Bank

In a rare move, the Hamas terrorist group’s military wing released a statement praising the attack, calling it “heroic” and a sign of future attacks to come, though the organization did not take responsibility for the shooting.

“The attack outside Nablus is the first real response to show the leaders of the enemies and those that are behind them (the United States), that things that you fear — are coming,” Hamas said in a statement.

Israeli defense officials have repeatedly warned that Hamas is looking to carry out attacks in the West Bank.

The head of the local settler council, Yossi Dagan, harshly criticized the government for failing to install security cameras in the area.

“If they had been (installed), these vile murderers would have been caught. Raziel was killed near the community of Gilad Farms, where there are no security apparatuses, despite repeated requests from my regional council,” Dagan said in a statement.

“This terrible attack should be a tremendous warning sign,” he added.

In November, Dagan launched a hunger strike along with representatives of bereaved families calling on the government to immediately transfer funds to improve West Bank’s security infrastructure. The campaign ended with an agreement signed by Netanyahu that put into writing a pledge to earmark NIS 800 million ($228 million) of the 2018 budget for West Bank roads and infrastructure development.

In unusual statement, David Friedman denounces Hamas for praising drive-by shooting and PA for paying terrorists' families

The US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, launched a rare scathing attack against the Palestinians Wednesday, blaming them squarely for the lack of peace with Israel.

“An Israeli father of six was killed last night in cold blood by Palestinian terrorists. Hamas praises the killers and PA laws will provide them financial rewards,” Friedman said in a statement posted to Twitter in response to the killing of Rabbi Raziel Shevach in a drive-by shooting attack Tuesday night.

“Look no further to why there is no peace. Praying for the bereaved Shevach family,” he added, echoing accusations leveled by Israeli officials in the wake of the attack.

Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely issued a statement thanking David Friedman for his remarks. “Dear Ambassador Friedman, we deeply appreciate your solidarity with Israel. We value your partnership in the fight against terror and your understanding that the Palestinian Authority’s support of terrorists lies at the root of the problem,” she tweeted.

The Palestinian Authority, which has expressed a refusal to engage in peace talks with Israel unless the Trump administration walks back the US president’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, has issued no statement on the killing.

MK Ahmad Tibi of the Joint (Arab) List faction blasted Friedman’s tweet, accusing the US envoy of “hypocrisy” for failing to condemn incidents in which Palestinian protesters were shot by Israeli forces.

“Ambassador Friedman is shocked by death? I didn’t hear him when an Israeli sniper killed double amputee Ibrahim Abu Thurayeh or when the kid Muhammad Tamimi was shot in the head and wounded. Because of this hypocrisy and double standard, and because of the Trump administration’s positions, the conflict is going on and blood is being shed. And when these are the representatives of the administration, don’t ask why there is no peace.”

The United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East Peace process, Nickolay Mladenov, also appeared to accuse the Palestinians of inciting violence and hindering the peace process, albeit indirectly. “There is no justification for terror and those who condone it, praise it or glorify it. This is not the path to peace! The perpetrators of yesterday’s attack must be brought to justice,” he tweeted.

The German foreign ministry condemned the attack and called on “all parties to act to calm the situation.”

“The deadly attack in which a resident of an Israeli outpost in the West Bank was murdered yesterday is most regrettable. We strongly condemn this execrable murder,” a spokesman said. “We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and to relatives of the murder victim.

“All those who bear responsibility for this attack or welcome it inflame the violence that makes it difficult to find a solution to the Middle East conflict through negotiation,” the spokesperson continued. “We expect all parties to act to calm the situation.”

Other international condemnations included statements from Martin Weiss, the Austrian ambassador to Israel, who said Raziel was “cowardly murdered,” and US Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who called the attack “horrific” and offered his “profound condolences” and prayers.

Unlike previous US envoys, Friedman was known as a strong supporter of Israeli settlements before he took office, serving as president of American Friends of Bet El Institutions, an organization that supports the large West Bank settlement near Ramallah.

US Ambassador David Friedman (L) pays a condolence call at the home of Likud MK Yehudah Glick in the West Bank settlement of Otniel on January 3, 2018. (Courtesy Har Hebron Regional Council)
That support has continued since his appointment as ambassador. In September, Friedman said that settlements “are part of Israel.”

In November, he canceled an appearance at a memorial ceremony for slain American teen Ezra Schwartz in the wake of a media report that it would be taking place at an illegal West Bank outpost.

Last week, Friedman paid a condolence visit at the home of Likud MK Yehudah Glick in the settlement of Otniel, following the death of his wife.

Two weeks ago, Israel’s Kan public broadcaster reported that Friedman had asked the US State Department to stop calling Israel’s presence in the West Bank an “occupation” in official documents. He reportedly recommended using the term “West Bank territory” instead of the “occupied territories.”

The State Department rejected the request, according to the report, but agreed to take up the subject again in the future. A State Department official later called the report “twisted and misleading” when asked for comment.

A suspected arson attack on a French kosher grocery store revived fears of anti-Semitism on Tuesday, three years to the day since a deadly assault on a Jewish supermarket by an Islamist gunman.

Prosecutors said the Promo & Destock store in the southern Paris suburb of Creteil caught fire overnight, days after it was hit by anti-Semitic graffiti.

“The damage is believed to be very severe,” Creteil prosecutor Laure Beccuau told AFP, adding that investigators do not believe the fire was accidental. She said that an investigation into the incident has been opened by the judicial police of the Val-de-Marne department.

The fire spread to the adjacent local branch of the Hyper Cacher kosher supermarket chain, which was also vandalized last week, according to the prosecutor.

The incident occurred exactly three years after French jihadist Amedy Coulibaly took hostages at the Porte de Vincennes branch of Hyper Cacher in eastern Paris on January 9, 2015, killing five people before elite police raided the premises and shot him dead. Despite the timing, a source close to the investigation warned that “it is too early to discuss motivations for this act.”

Israel’s ambassador to France, Aliza Bin Noun, called the fire a “shameful provocation.”

The prosecutor’s office in the Parisian suburb of Creteil said that a fire was reported between 4 and 5 a.m. at the Promo & Destock store. “Preliminary information suggests there is very significant damage,” Beccuau told AFP.

On January 3, authorities said a total of five swastikas were daubed with red paint on the shuttered blinds of Promo & Destock and the local Hyper Cacher branch. JTA reported at the time that “there are no suspects.”

French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said in a statement after the swastikas were discovered that he “firmly condemns” the incidents, vowing to bring those responsible to justice and calling their actions an attack against the entire Jewish community of France, Le Parisien reported.

The 2015 attack on the Hyper Cacher supermarket triggered deep concern among France’s large Jewish community over growing anti-Semitism.

That year, a record 7,900 French Jews emigrated to Israel, many of them citing increased fears over anti-Semitism.

Though the exodus has since slowed, a string of anti-Semitic crimes have continued to worry France’s large Jewish community.

In April 2017, a Jewish woman was murdered, pushed from a third-floor window by a Muslim neighbour, while a Jewish family was beaten, held hostage and robbed in what rights groups said was a hate crime.

Former French prime minister Manuel Valls told Europe 1 radio last Wednesday that more needed to be done to tackle anti-Semitism, which he said had become “deeply rooted” in France.

“What has changed over the past three years is the awareness of this level of anti-Semitism,” he said.

Valls added that French society as a whole had failed to mobilize in support of Jews following anti-Semitic attacks such as the 2012 Islamist shooting at a Jewish school in Toulouse in which four people were killed, including three children.

“These are crimes that must be prosecuted and condemned, we need to do more,” he said.

Controversial bid to shutter minimarkets on Shabbat squeaks through Knesset

Legislation pushed by Shas leader giving him control over what stores remain open on Jewish day of rest passes after opposition filibuster

A controversial law granting the interior minister the power to shutter stores on Shabbat passed in the Knesset by a razor-thin majority early Tuesday morning, after the ruling coalition overcame internal divisions to muster the needed votes.

The legislation, championed by the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, passed by 58 to 57 votes in its second and third readings, with Yisrael Beytenu lawmakers and a few other coalition MKs sitting out the vote or joining the opposition.

The vote came after a 15-hour filibuster by the opposition.

The law grants the interior minister, currently Shas head Aryeh Deri, the power to oversee and reject local ordinances relating to whether businesses may remain open on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest that runs from Friday evening until Saturday night.

It passed its first reading last month after Deri threatened to quit the government, issuing an ultimatum hours before the vote conditioning his continued tenure as minister on its passage. But it had since languished on the coalition whip’s desk as Deri sought to secure the majority needed to pass it.

In the final vote, four of Yisrael Beytenu’s five MKs voted against the measure, with Immigration Minister Sofa Landver, not wishing to risk losing her ministerial post by voting against the government, sitting out of the ballot. Likud MK Sharren Haskel and Kulanu’s Tali Ploskov also skipped the vote, having expressed misgivings about the move, while independent lawmaker Orly Levy-Abekasis joined the opposition with a no vote.

Both coalition MK Moti Yogev (Jewish Home) and opposition MK Yossi Yonah (Zionist Union) were absent from the vote following the recent deaths of close relatives.

In a last-ditch attempt to secure a majority, coalition leaders reached an agreement Sunday to soften the bill, agreeing to exempt convenience stores attached to gas stations from the legislation but rejecting a proposed amendment that would have exempted entirely the tourist city of Eilat. The exemption was included in the final law after MKs voted to accept the amendment before the final passage of the bill.

The law will not affect the secular bastion of Tel Aviv, which Israel’s High Court recently ruled could pass its own bylaws to govern what stores may remain open on Shabbat. Some coalition lawmakers had hoped to also include an exemption for the tourist city of Eilat, but the proposal was rejected by the ultra-Orthodox Shas and United Torah Judaism parties.

The hours-long voting process was punctured by several twists and turns throughout the night.

The opposition, which had prevented the coalition from imposing time limits on the debate, presented hundreds of amendments, some satirical, to the bill, forcing lawmakers to vote on them one by one. In what appeared to be a mistake, one such amendment — a derisive revision proposed by Zionist Union MK Itzik Shmuli to exempt shops that also sell kitchenware — was approved by the plenary when two coalition members forgot to vote against it. Learning of the misstep, coalition whip David Amsalem immediately called a meeting of the Knesset Internal Affairs Committee to remove the amendment from the final text of the bill.

In a separate minor hitch that confused lawmakers and observers throughout the night, the electronic screen of United Torah Judaism MK Yisrael Eichler failed to register his vote, meaning that the result of every vote on each amendment initially appeared to be a 57-57 draw.

At around 1 a.m., opposition lawmakers attempted to catch the coalition off-guard, temporarily pulling the amendments from the agenda to force an immediate vote on the final version of the bill when they realized that they had a majority in the plenary. Preventing a shock loss, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked took to the podium for some 40 minutes, reading long sections of the Declaration of Independence, until the coalition restored its majority in the hall, promoting the opposition to return the amendments to the agenda.

Ahead of the vote, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned members of his Likud party to toe the party line or risk felling his government.

“Whoever votes against the mini-markets bill is in favor of toppling the government,” Netanyahu told MKs during a closed-door Likud faction meeting on Monday, according to leaks to Hebrew media.
The comments came hours before a Likud court rejected Amsalem’s bid to oust Haskel from the party over her opposition to the bill.
Critics of the law see it as an attempt to force religious observance on the public. The coalition agreed to back the proposal as part of an effort to shore up ultra-Orthodox support in the wake of a dispute over train maintenance on Shabbat that saw MK Yaakov Litzman (United Torah Judaism) resign as health minister in protest late last year.

In a separate vote immediately after the approval of the minimarkets bill, lawmakers passed a measure allowing Litzman to retain control of the Health Ministry while remaining a deputy minister.

The vote on the minimarkets bill was originally slated for last week, but was pushed off when the death of Likud MK Yehudah Glick’s wife left the coalition without a surefire majority.

Highlighting coalition efforts to get the bill passed, Deri unsuccessfully sought to bring Glick to the Knesset hours after the funeral of Glick’s wife. He also tried to have one of his own ministers resign from the Knesset — Religious Affairs Minister David Azoulay was hospitalized for most of last week and therefore unable to vote — so that another Shas member could take his place.
Both Glick and Azoulay were present in the Knesset on Tuesday.

Netanyahu: Israel has stopped hijacked planes from crashing into European cities

PM tells NATO ambassadors that Israeli intel has halted 'several dozen major terrorist attacks,' some involving civil aviation

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday hinted that Israel has prevented hijacked airplanes from crashing into European cities.

“We have, through our intelligence services, provided information that has stopped several dozen major terrorist attacks, many of them in European countries,” he told foreign diplomats in Jerusalem.

Get The Times of Israel's Daily Edition by email and never miss our top stories FREE SIGN UP
“Some of these could have been massive attacks, of the worst kind that have ever been experienced on the soil of Europe — and even worse, because they involved civil aviation. Israel has prevented that, and thereby helped save many European lives,” Netanyahu said.

He did not provide details about the nature of the attacks Israel helped prevent.

At a meeting of Israel-based ambassadors to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Netanyahu said Jerusalem contributes to the security of every single member of the Western defense alliance, in that it fights both Sunni and Shiite strands of radical Islam.

Besides fighting Islamic State terrorism aimed at European cities, Israel is also preventing the group from creating a second stronghold in Egypt, he said.

“ISIS is being destroyed in Iraq and Syria, but it is trying to establish an alternative territorial base in the Sinai. Israel is contributing to preventing that in myriad ways,” Netanyahu said. “In general, I would say that Israel is the most powerful indigenous force in the Middle East that fights radical Islam.”

Israel further helps NATO by fighting Iran, the dominant Shiite power, the prime minister went on. The Jewish state does not only seek to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring nuclear weapons, it is also “absolutely committed to preventing Iran from establishing a military base in Syria. And we back our words with action,” he added, likely hinting at various airstrikes on weapon convoys and factories allegedly carried out by Israel.

Furthermore, Iran plans to import 100,000 Shiite fighters to Syria as part of its quest to dominate and eventually “conquer” the Middle East, he charged.
Israeli satellite images show results of an airstrike attributed to the IDF on a Syrian military weapons development base on September 7, 2017. (ImageSat International)
If Tehran were successful in its efforts, radical Sunni and Shiite forces would clash in Syria, sending millions of refugees to European shores, the prime minister warned.

“Where will the spillover [of a Sunni-Shiite clash in Syria] happen? In Europe. Where will the human flow go? To Europe. Who’s preventing that right now? Israel? Right now, Israel alone. But I maintain that it’s a common interest that we have,” he told the NATO ambassadors during the public part of the event.

Israel and NATO have cooperated on security matters for decades but recently upgraded their ties significantly. Last year, Israel opened its first office at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Israeli officials have repeatedly said that the Jewish state opposes the presence of Iran and its proxies, notably Hezbollah, in southern Syria and Lebanon.

Israel has been negotiating with the United States and Russia, the main brokers in Syria, to keep Iran-backed Shiite militias and the Hezbollah terrorist group away from the border.

Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and others have all said that Israel’s policy is to target shipments of advanced weaponry, including accurate long-range missiles, that are heading to or in the possession of Hezbollah.

In late December, Assad’s troops, accompanied by Iranian-backed fighters, recaptured the Syrian Golan from rebels, allowing President Bashar Assad to reassert control over a small portion of the area adjacent to the Israeli border. Still, much of the area along the border, around the city of Quneitra, remains under rebel control.

Last week, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said the most serious immediate threat to Israel was posed by Hezbollah, followed by other jihadist groups supported by Tehran positioned on the Syrian border.

Describing Iran as a “multidimensional threat,” the army chief said the most worrying aspect is the Islamic Republic’s desire to obtain nuclear capabilities, followed by its efforts to achieve hegemony in the region.

'SANCTUARY' FOR ILLEGALS BECOMES BLACKS' WORST NIGHTMARE

California is now a “sanctuary state,” thanks to Gov. Jerry Brown and liberal Democrats in Sacramento.

The Golden State is home to an estimated 2.3 million illegal aliens. And police are no longer permitted to ask suspects about their immigration status or assist with federal immigration-enforcement activities.

To add insult to injury, liberals tried to free Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, the illegal alien and seven-time felon who was acquitted of murder and assault in the 2015 San Francisco fatal shooting of 32-year-old Kate Steinle. Fortunately, Garcia Zarate will not be released for “time served.” He’s been indicted by a federal grand jury for violating state immigration and gun laws and will remain in custody to face federal charges.

Yes, California voters are dumb for voting in liberal Democrats who continue to pass laws that endanger citizens.

For black Americans who might not understand this – you too will be impacted! Now that California has been designated a “sanctuary state,” illegal aliens, including MS-13, will flock to the state in droves and they’ll end up in the black community.

For the past 27 years, my nonprofit organization, BOND, has been trying to educate blacks on this issue with town hall forums, media, rallies, etc. Along with groups like FAIR, California Coalition for Immigration Reform and the late Terry Anderson, we’ve been warning the state and the nation of what was coming, but most blacks refused to listen.

We couldn’t get blacks to support a border wall or to vote against liberal Democrats who are selling them out for the Hispanic vote. Most blacks are so brainwashed by their godless black leaders, they’re willing to vote against their own self-interest. They blindly follow corrupt Democrats like Barack Obama, Maxine Waters, Karen Bass, Kamala Harris, Mark Ridley-Thomas and others who use them. All Democrats have to do is accuse anyone who opposes illegal immigration of being “racist,” and that’s enough to put blacks in a hypnotic trance and make them vote for Democrats.

The illegal immigration issue is out of control. The Hispanic population is growing rapidly, and it’s flexing its political muscle. There’s a warfare brewing between black and Hispanic gangs in Los Angeles, and it’s just a matter of time before it explodes. As a result, decent blacks are fleeing California and moving down south.

Order Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson’s book, “The Antidote: Healing America from the Poison of Hate, Blame, and Victimhood.”

Illegal aliens are draining California taxpayers. According to Fox News, Los Angeles County taxpayers paid a whopping $1.3 billion in just two years for illegal-alien benefits and programs – nearly a quarter of the amount spent on the state’s needy population.

Over the past 60 years, the black community traded in values and principles for welfare and programs. As a result, most blacks rely on government assistance. Blacks are fighting with illegals in Los Angeles for health care, public education and other services.

I know many qualified blacks who’ve applied for all types of jobs in Los Angeles County and weren’t hired because they don’t speak Spanish; blacks are upset about this. If blacks stood up and demanded that their elected officials do something about this issue, the problem could be solved. But they’re so angry and preoccupied with blaming the white man, they can’t see that they’re voting for their own self-destruction.

The NAACP has completely sold out blacks. It supports amnesty, and it has allowed illegals to hitch their plight to the civil-rights struggle of blacks. The shameless NAACP is also pushing the insidious lie that increased immigration is helpful to the black community.

Members of the corrupt Congressional Black Caucus unanimously support amnesty for Hispanics and for the more than 3 million immigrants of African descent.

Except for a handful of black conservatives like myself, Sheriff David Clarke, Larry Elder, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell and Peter Kirsanow, there aren’t any black voices boldly speaking out about the devastating impact illegal immigration is having on black Americans.

Democrats are giving out all kinds of taxpayer funded goodies to seduce Hispanics and addict them, just like they did to blacks. They’re brainwashing, spoiling and dumbing them down to use them for votes. There are some decent Hispanics who don’t agree with rewarding illegals, but they’re too afraid to speak out.

And now that California has legalized the sale of recreational marijuana, the state will attract more criminals and the worst kind of people. What a shame!

President Trump and Congress are deliberating the future of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. Trump has reiterated that he wants to work with Democrats to find a permanent legislative solution to allow those protected by DACA to stay in the country, but only if it comes with a long-promised border wall and major changes to the immigration system.

Blacks need an advocate on this issue, and they have a friend in President Trump. But if they don’t wake up and stand for what is right, they will be permanently replaced.

For blacks to free themselves from this nightmare, they must first turn back to God and love Him with all their soul and might. Second, they must abandon group thinking and the Democratic Party. If they do this, we can make America great again overnight.

Two female Bedouin Israeli teenagers were indicted on Monday on charges they were planning to carry out a New Year’s eve attack on behalf of the Islamic State terrorist group, the Shin Bet security service said.

A 24-year-old East Jerusalem man, Ahmad Abu Ramila, was also charged on Monday of lesser counts in connection with the plot.

Rahma al-Assad and Tasnin al-Assad, both of them 19 from the Bedouin town of Lakiya in southern Israel, were charged with a number of counts, including planning a deadly terror attack, contacting a foreign agent and joining an illegal organization.

Abu Ramila was charged with contacting a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit a crime, and with obstruction of justice and destroying evidence for deleting his conversations with the two women.

According to the Shin Bet, the two teens made contact with members of the Islamic State terrorist group sometime last year.

During their interrogations, the teenagers said the Islamic State members, from outside Israel, told them to “carry out terror attacks against Jews in the State of Israel,” the Shin Bet said in a statement.

“They were even instructed by some of them to carry out preparatory missions ahead of the attack,” the security service said.

According to the charge sheet, this included visiting Beersheba’s Ben Gurion University campus in order to determine if they would be able to bring in a suitcase full of explosives for a bombing attack there. They determined they could not.

They also refused to carry out an attack at the Beersheba bus station as many Muslim Israelis travel through it, according to the indictment.

This fall, Rahma al-Assad contacted Abu Ramila — who planned on marrying Tasnin al-Assad — to see if he would help carry out a terror attack during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

According to the indictment, Abu Ramila had also been in contact with Islamic State members. He refused to carry out the attack, but Rahma insisted.

According to the indictment, Tasnin tried to help Abu Ramila get out of carrying out the attack, urging him to tell Rahma that he would only commit a terror attack if she got him a gun, as Tasnin knew that Rahma would not be able to do so.

The pair also shared Islamic State publications on the internet and shared “inciting content that called for terror attacks against Jews and Israel,” the Shin Bet said.

It was not clear if the two teenagers are related.

According to the charges against them, Abu Ramila and the two women planned to eventually leave Israel and join the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

The two women were arrested on December 18 and Abu Ramila was arrested on December 26, but a gag order was placed on the case, preventing publication.

That order was removed on Monday, as indictments were filed against the three of them in Beersheba District Court.

On January 1, 2018 President Trump tweeted "The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!"

On January 2, 2018 President Trump tweeted "It's not only Pakistan that we pay billions of dollars to for nothing, but also many other countries, and others. As an example, we pay the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel. We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?"

Like Pakistan and the Palestinians, Egypt is also a major beneficiary of US aid. Reuters reported the amount of US aid to Egypt "According to a March 2017 report by the bipartisan Congressional Research Service, between 1948 and 2016 the United States gave Egypt $77.4 billion in bilateral foreign aid, including $1.3 billion a year in military aid from 1987 to the present."

Although the Arabs are massive beneficiaries of US aid, many despise the US and consider US aid Jizya. Jizya is a discriminatory tax that, according to Islamic law, non-Muslim subjects have to pay to their Muslim rulers.

On March 17, 2013 MEMRI reported "Following are excerpts from an interview with Egyptian cleric Dr. Khaled Said, which aired on Al-Hafez TV (via the Internet) on March 17, 2013....

Interviewer: The aid the Americans give us is the jizya tax they have to pay?

Khaled Said: Yes, it is. They pay it for the right of passage through our airspace and territorial waters.

Interviewer: They pay to keep us quiet?

Khaled Said: They pay so that we will let them be.

Israel sends ‘moral support’ to Iranians ‘seeking freedom and justice’

While the Israeli government is not directly supporting Iranian protesters confronting their radical Islamic government, Israel is clearly rooting for the terror-sponsoring regime’s demise and renewed friendship with the Iranian people.

By: Steve Leibowitz, World Israel News

When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video message to the Iranian people on Monday evening, he did so knowing that he could give them no more than clear moral support as they faced the guns of a tyrannical regime. Netanyahu ridiculed as “laughable” Iranian government charges that Israel, the US or any other country is supporting the protesters.

The Prime Minister praised the “heroic” protesters battling a “cruel regime” saying, “I heard today Iranian President Rouhani’s claim that Israel is behind the protests in Iran. It’s not only false. It’s laughable. And unlike Rouhani, I will not insult the Iranian people. They deserve better.”

Netanyahu described the protesters as: “Brave Iranians, pouring into the streets seeking freedom and justice. They seek the basic liberties that have been denied to them for decades. Iran’s cruel regime wastes tens of billions of dollars spreading hate. This money could have built schools and hospitals. No wonder mothers and fathers are marching in the streets. The regime is terrified of them, of their own people. That’s why they jail students. That’s why they ban social media.”

Netanyahu went on to criticize European leaders, which he claimed were less supportive of the Iranian people than Israel. “Sadly, many European governments watch in silence as heroic young Iranians are beaten in the streets. That’s just not right. And I, for one, will not stay silent,” Netanyahu said.

The Prime Minister ended his video message saying, “Iranians and Israelis will be great friends once again,” and “I wish the Iranian people success in their noble quest for freedom.”

Iranian population victimized by regime
Dr. (Col.) Eran Lerman was a high ranking officer in IDF military intelligence and a top official on the Prime Minister’s National Security Council. Lerman told World Israel News (WIN), “These protests will hopefully impact Iran and its clout in the entire region. Somehow there is an assumption that the Iranian regime enjoys the support of its people. That support has always been a very fragile and its now being put to the test.”

“The international community needs to lend its support to the people who are exposing the nature of the Iranian regime as a dictatorship. The idea that we should shy away from telling the truth because our words might be used by the regime to accuse the protesters of collaboration with the West is nonsense. They will accuse us anyway. Anyone who questions the authority of Supreme Ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is considered a traitor by definition in the eyes of the regime,” Lerman added.

“The protesters must be given the support that was not given during the rebellion in 2009. If there is a real government overthrow, then Iran can become a very different place, but even if the regime survives, the message is very clear. The cost of Iran’s adventures in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen has depleted their national treasury and that means that the money that was supposed to reach the people went into overseas adventures. This is a central message of the protests,” said Lerman.

According to Lerman, “The protesters are saying ‘Iran first,’ stop wasting our money. They are asking whether the government cares for its people or for its revolutionary vision of Islamic expansion. Iran will use all force at its disposal to put down these protests but I have a sense that the Revolutionary Guards that used to be fanatical and committed, have become corrupt. They broadened their ranks taking in soldiers who may ultimately refuse to turn their guns on their own. It’s high risk and has always been high risk for anyone in history who rebelled against a dictatorship.”

‘The Iranian people are not our enemy’
Knesset member Yossi Yonah is a former leader of the Israeli social protest movement and a professor of philosophy. Yonah told WIN, “As an Israeli politician of course I have a problem with the Iranian regime, but we do not view the Iranian people as our enemy. Of course we have sympathy with the Iranian people who, like people all over the world, demand justice and a decent standard of living. I am watching what is unfolding with great appreciation and moral support and wishing that their struggle will be successful. People want to better their lives and so we have sympathy with such a basic human demand.”

Knesset member Dr. (Col.) Anat Berko is a leading Israeli expert in counter terrorism. Berko told WIN, “It’s a very oppressive regime in Iran. Their brand of radical Islam are not just state sponsors of terrorism, they are in fact a terrorist regime and the Shiite equivalent of Islamic State.”

“You have a lot of young, well-educated people that are getting nothing from their country and they see religious clerics taking control of the state resources and eliminating hope or future for their country,” Berko noted.

“We don’t need to be involved but I can say as a Knesset member that it’s not surprising that their revolt in 2009 failed partly because there was no support coming from the White House under President Obama’s leadership. President Trump is very realistic he knows who the enemy is. This time the US is speaking out very clearly and that will encourage the protests to continue and provide a greater chance for their success,” Berko said.

An AFP correspondent in Awkar outside the capital Beirut said several hundred pro-Palestinian demonstrators had gathered near the US embassy, located in the area.

Several people were injured by rocks and tear gas, the correspondent said.

There was no immediate comment from security forces.

Protesters waving Palestinian and Lebanese flags, and sporting black-and-white checked keffiyeh scarves, chanted slogans against Trump.

A group of demonstrators set alight an effigy of the US president, whose decision upended decades of American diplomacy and an international consensus to leave the status of Jerusalem to be resolved in negotiations.

The demonstrators included members of Palestinian parties, as well as Lebanese Islamists and leftists.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon, including those who fled or were expelled from their homes after Israel’s founding, as well as their descendants.

Trump in his White House speech insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace, a new approach was long overdue, and described his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel’s government as merely based on reality. He stressed that he was not specifying the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in the city, and called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites.

Islamist groups denounced Arab leaders for not acting forcefully enough in response to Trump’s declaration, and called on the Palestinian Authority to declare the peace process dead, according to reports on Twitter.

In the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, some 10,000 people rallied outside the US embassy on Sunday to denounce US President Donald Trump’s decision.

The rallies follow protests against Trump’s announcement in cities across the world, from Pakistan, Turkey, Iraq and Iran to France and the UK. On Saturday, dozens of people took part in an authorized but rare protest in Kuwait City to denounce Trump’s decision.

The Indonesia protests were organized mostly by the Islamist Prosperous Justice Party, or PKS.

They were the third and biggest in Indonesia since Trump’s address announcing the decision on Wednesday.

In Jakarta, protesters carried banners reading, “US Embassy, Get Out from Al Quds,” “Free Jerusalem and Palestinians” and “We are with the Palestinians.” Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.

Wearing traditional Islamic white robes, the protesters also unfurled Indonesian and Palestinian flags.

A written statement from PKS described Trump’s decision as “a form of humiliation and provocation against Muslims all over the world.” It said similar and simultaneous protests also were held Sunday in at least 10 provincial capitals and cities across Indonesia.

Earlier in the day, another group, calling itself Indonesia’s Volunteers Society, held a similar rally in Jakarta, hundreds of meters from the embassy.

Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has strongly condemned Trump’s move, which he described as a violation of UN resolutions.

Indonesia has long been a strong supporter of Palestinians and has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

In Kuwait City, protesters gathered Saturday at Irada Square outside the National Assembly carrying banners reading “Jerusalem is an eternal Palestinian capital” and “Terrorism is an American business.”

The call to protest had been made by several political groups, including the Islamic Constitutional Movement (ICM) linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, and civil society associations.

A “Wanted” poster of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was torched by one protester and trampled on by others.

Authorities allowed protests at Irada Square and outside the Palestinian embassy in Kuwait City, but banned any demonstration near the American embassy. Speakers urged Kuwait and Arab governments to pressure Trump to reverse his controversial decision.

IDF destroys Gaza attack tunnel crossing into Israeli territory
A month and a half after blowing up a Palestinian Islamic Jihad tunnel, army says it wrecked a second, 'substantial' one belonging to Hamas
By JUDAH ARI GROSS

https://www.timesofisrael.com/idf-destroys-gaza-attack-tunnel-crossing-into-israeli-territory/?utm_source=idf-destroys-gaza-attack-tunnel-crossing-into-israeli-territory&utm_medium=desktop-browser&utm_campaign=desktop-notifications
The Israel Defense Forces this weekend destroyed an attack tunnel coming from the southern Gaza Strip that entered Israeli territory, after demolishing one nearly a month and a half ago, the army announced on Sunday.

The military said the kilometer-long tunnel was constructed by the Hamas terrorist group. It began in the Gazan city of Khan Younis and extended “hundreds of meters” inside Israeli territory.

IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus would not specify where exactly it was located in Israel, but said it ended in open farmland, approximately one kilometer (0.6 miles) from the nearest Israeli community.

“We monitored this tunnel for a long period of time,” Conricus said.

He said the tunnel appeared to be a “very substantial” one for Hamas, “based on the level of detail.”

He added that the army holds “Hamas responsible twice — once, because it is responsible for any aggressive action coming from the Gaza Strip, and twice, because this was a Hamas terror tunnel.”

On October 30, the IDF blew up an attack tunnel belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group. In the blast and its aftermath, some 14 terrorists were killed, including two senior commanders and five who were digging inside Israeli territory at the time of the demolition.

In this weekend’s blast, no Palestinians were reported killed, Conricus said.

However, the lieutenant-colonel warned, in the future, tunnels “can become death traps for terrorists digging them.”

The decision to destroy it was made several weeks ago. The officer said the military did not see a connection between the tunnel demolition and ongoing, low-level protests in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, which Hamas is actively encouraging, against US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“We see these as separate events,” Conricus said. “There is no direct link, other than that the Hamas terrorist group is behind both of them.”

He credited the discovery of the tunnel to a “new system that the IDF now has,” which is the result of collaboration between various engineering, intelligence and ground forces units. “I am confident there will be more achievements in the future,” he said of the system.

The tunnel was also destroyed using a different method than the one destroyed in October, which was blown up with explosives.

The army would not elaborate on the nature of the new technique.

The military is currently constructing an underground barrier around the Gaza Strip that is meant to both prevent future attack tunnels and discover ones already constructed.

Conricus said that as the military’s “toolbox” for underground warfare improves, the danger of border-crossing tunnels, with which terrorists can infiltrate Israeli territory and carry out attacks, is becoming significantly diminished.

“I’m cautious to say we’re past this threat, but we are advancing to that,” he said.

Top 10 Thanksgiving Bible Verses

Thursday, November 24 is the American holiday of Thanksgiving. Originally a day to celebrate a successful harvest, President Abraham Lincoln made it an official federal holiday in 1863 when he declared a day for “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”
Though still ceremoniously celebrated only one day a year, Judaism considers every day of life, a day to thank and praise God.  In fact, the Jewish people get their Hebrew name, Yehudim, from the Biblical Matriarch Leah naming her fourth son Yehuda (Judah). Yehuda comes from the Hebrew word hodah, which means to ‘give thanks.’
The Bible is full of texts which reflect thanksgiving for the blessings God has bestowed upon us. It is a wonderful addition to any special gathering, and certainly a Thanksgiving day feast, to share thanks and include Bible verses of thanksgiving.
Here are the top 10 Biblical verses about Thanksgiving.

1. “When you have eaten your fill, give thanks to Hashem your God for the good land which He has given you.” (Deuteronomy 8:10)

2. “In that day, you shall say: ‘I give thanks to You, Hashem!’” (Isaiah 12:1)

3. “The living, only the living can give thanks to You. Fathers relate to children Your acts of grace.” (Isaiah 38:19)

4. “Gladness and joy shall abide there, Thanksgiving and the sound of music.” (Isaiah 51:3)

5. “From them shall issue thanksgiving and the sound of dancers.” (Jeremiah 30:19)

6. “Give thanks to God of Hosts, for Hashem is good, for His kindness is everlasting!” (Jeremiah 33:11)

7. “I wash my hands in innocence, and walk around Your mizbayach, Hashem, raising my voice in thanksgiving, and telling all Your wonders.” (Psalms 26:6)

8. “I, with loud thanksgiving, Will sacrifice to You.” (Yonah 2:10)

9. “I acknowledge and praise You, O God of my fathers, You who have given me wisdom and power.” (Daniel 2:23)

10. “Praise Hashem for He is good; His steadfast love is eternal.” (Chronicles 16:24)

134 Quakes in California: "When the Big One Hits, Will God Take the Good With the Bad?"
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 22, 2017 , 12:30 pm
“Therefore we are not afraid though the earth reels, though mountains topple into the sea.” Psalms 46:3 (The Israel Bible™️)

A swarm of 134 tremors in California and a recent geological study that confirmed a year of increased seismic activity have led to speculations that the earthquakes are a portal for a God-sent destructive force to come into the world before the Messiah, striking out indiscriminately at both good and evil.
Last Monday, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake rocked central California. Though considered a minor event, the shaking still has not stopped and instability in that three-mile section of the volatile San Andreas Fault generated an additional 133 tremors in the last seven days. All but 17 of these tremors went undetected by the general public, registering at less than 2.5 on the Richter scale. This swarm of quakes raised fears of ‘the big one’, the long-anticipated devastating West Coast earthquake.

The first snowfall of Israel’s winter season covered Mount Hermon, located in Israel’s north, with several centimeters of snow on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
With its high elevation, the Upper Hermon is usually the first place in Israel to see snow each year. The snow began falling at 5905 feet above sea level, Arutz Sheva reported, and IDF bases located in the area were buried in several centimeters of accumulation as temperatures plunged to 1 degree Celsius (33 degrees Fahrenheit).

Discovery of 1,500-Year-Old Byzantine Church May Lead to ‘Lost’ City of Ashdod-Yam

The remarkably preserved ruins of a 1,500-year-old Byzantine church or monastery floor were discovered during an excavation in the coastal city of Ashdod. Archaeologists believe that the finding has revealed the location of the ancient Roman-Byzantine city of Ashdod-Yam.
The main find at the site was a sophisticated color mosaic floor which includes a Greek inscription dedicating the building to a prominent bishop in the sixth century.
The mosaic floor at the Byzantine church (Screenshot)
“[By the grace of God (or Jesus)], this work was done from the foundation under Procopius, our most saintly and most holy bishop, in the month Dios of the 3rd indiction, year 292.”
It is the first time use of the Georgian calendar has appeared in an excavation in Israel, said Hebrew University’s Dr. Leah Di Segni, who deciphered the inscription. The Georgian year 292 corresponds to 539 CE on the Gregorian calendar.
Ashdod-Yam (Ashdod by the Sea) is known in classical sources as Azotos Paralios. One of the most important coastal cities in Israel during the Byzantine period, it is shown in the Madaba Map – a 6th century CE mosaic map of the Middle East found at Madaba, Jordan – as a flourishing town with buildings, churches and a street flanked with colonnades.

Surprising Biblical Origins of Thanksgiving: Puritan Founders Saw Selves as ‘New Hebrews’
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 23, 2017 , 11:30 am
“A Psalm of thanksgiving. Shout unto Hashem, all the earth.” Psalms 100:1 (The Israel Bible™️)
image: https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Thanksgiving-Brownscombe.jpg
“The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth”, Jennie A. Brownscombe., 1914. (Wikimedia Commons)
A closer look at the Puritan origins of Thanksgiving, considered by many to be a secular American feast without religious significance, reveals that the roots of the holiday may have been part of a larger replacement theology agenda endorsed by the holiday’s founders.
The religious nature of Thanksgiving is discussed at length in Jewish law, which treats Thanksgiving exceptionally by allowing observant Jews to join in the celebrations despite a Torah prohibition against participating in non-Jewish traditions.
You shall not copy the practices of the land of Egypt where you dwelt, or of the land of Canaan to which I am taking you; nor shall you follow their laws. Leviticus 18:3
This special dispensation is due to rabbinic authorities recognizing Thanksgiving’s status as a secular national holiday rather than a religious one.
However, historians agree that the Puritans who first celebrated Thanksgiving did indeed have religious intent. Some scholars even identify it with the holiday of Sukkot.
“The origin of the harvest festival in England by the time the Pilgrims decided to leave was rooted in the Biblical practice of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot),” Dr. Paul Jehle, Executive Director of the Plymouth Rock Foundation, wrote in his book “Plymouth in the Words of Her Founders”.
“Note that we do not know the original date of this event, though most suppose it to be in late October, which would correspond to the time of the Feast of Tabernacles.”

Israel Victory Project Calls for Palestinian Defeat as Solution to Mideast Conflict
By Staff Writer November 23, 2017 , 12:30 pm
“For it is Hashem your God who marches with you to do battle for you against your enemy, to bring you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4 (The Israel Bible™️)

A new round of academic panels championing the idea of Israeli victory and Palestinian defeat was launched yesterday at a special conference held at Tel-Aviv University, featuring MK Oded Forer, Major General (res.) Uzi Dayan, and former head of Peace Now Yariv Oppenheimer.
The Israel Victory Project, initiated by the US-based think tank the Middle East Forum, maintains that a resolution to the conflict can only occur once the Palestinians are defeated, give up the goal of destroying Israel and recognize Israel as the Jewish state.
Israel Victory Project panel launches at Tel Aviv University on November 22, 2017. (Matanya Arad)
“The current approach to achieving a resolution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict has consistently failed because it allows Palestinian rejectionism to be met by a call for further concessions from Israel, thus pushing peace further away because of the entrenchment of a Palestinian denial of the Jewish people’s right to sovereignty,” said Professor Daniel Pipes, President of the Middle East Forum.
“As Ronald Reagan said regarding the US fight against communism, the only way to ‘win is if they lose,’” added Pipes.
In June 2016, the Israel Victory Caucus was launched in the US Congress by Senators Ron DeSantis and Bill Johnson, with a parallel caucus co-chaired by MKs Oded Forer and Yaakov Peri opening in the Knesset. Last month, a joint declaration was signed by both caucuses that declared “the primary obstacle to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the near century of Palestinian rejectionism of the right of self-determination for the Jewish People.”

Dead Sea Scrolls Written by Celibate Jewish Essene “Monks”, Qumran Skeletons Confirm
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 21, 2017 , 12:30 pm

Based on new studies, researchers have confirmed that the ancient site of Qumran, location of the Dead Sea Scrolls, was likely the home of the Essenes, an all-male celibate Jewish sect in the Second Temple Era.
Until now, the subject was a matter of debate, as scientists had identified both male and female skeletons in the site’s cemetery. But research done on 33 newly excavated skeletons from Qumran has revealed that almost all were male, with the genders of three skeletons  indeterminate. The researchers also reexamined 53 previously unearthed skeletons from Qumran’s cemetery and discovered that six of seven individuals formerly tagged as women were actually men.
Researcher Yossi Nagar, an anthropologist for the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), reported last week that the most probable explanation for the lopsided demographics is that Qumran was a community of Essenes: a Jewish sect that lived a monastic life in the desert, adopting strict dietary laws and a commitment to celibacy.
Some theologians have speculated that Jesus, the founder of Christianity, was an Essene, adopting the sect’s asceticism and celibacy. Rabbi Daniel Sperber, a professor of Talmud at Bar Ilan University, discounted this theory.
“There are so many concepts about Jesus and so little known about him,” Rabbi Sperber told Breaking Israel News. “In any case, it is unlikely he was an Essene.”

Canada Wants to ‘Reintegrate’ Returning ISIS Fighters Into Society

The Canadian government has pledged to “reintegrate” into society Canadian-born ISIS fighters who want to leave the Islamic terror group and return to Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.
Admitting that the return of ISIS fighters “may have serious national security implications,” Trudeau promised the former militants would be monitored, but added, “We are also there to help them to let go of that terrorist ideology.”
According to government figures, about 180 Canadian citizens traveled to the Middle East to join the radical Islamic State. Most have been killed in fighting, but about 60 have returned, the Times of Israel reported.
So far, only two have been prosecuted under Canada’s anti-terrorism act.
Other countries whose citizens have joined ISIS are taking a hard line, with many governments seeking to assassinate their terrorists nationals in Syria and Iraq to ensure they don’t return home. A British ISIS recruit known as Jihadi John was put on a “kill list” by his government. He was eventually targeted and killed in a US-led drone strike.

Plague of Hail Hits Mediterranean City in Turkey Amidst Violent Thunderstorm
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 21, 2017 , 1:30 pm
“So Moshe held out his rod toward the sky, and Hashem sent thunder and hail, and fire streamed down to the ground, as Hashem rained down hail upon the land of Egypt.” Exodus 9:23 (The Israel Bible™️)

A massive hailstorm hit the Mediterranean city of Mersin, Turkey, on November 19, 2017. (Severe Weather Turkey/Facebook)
On Sunday, a seaside resort in Turkey got a taste of the seventh Biblical plague when golfball-sized hailstones buried the city of Mersin in over three feet of ice. What began as a run-of-the-mill storm turned into a Biblically-inspired scenario as violent thunder preceded a deluge of ice, just as it did in Egypt.
image: https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/hail.jpg
Hail storm in Turkey. (Facebook)
Though the hail itself was not necessarily miraculous, it was certainly out of the ordinary for the Mediterranean city which normally experiences balmy temperatures that rarely go below freezing, even in the winter.
Streets were blocked and car windshields shattered as balls of ice incongruously piled up at the base of palm trees that lined the sandy shore.
The Israel Bible gives a poignant explanation of why the seventh plague, a combination of fire and ice, is appropriate for the turbulent times we live in.
“The hail contains both fire and ice, yet the fire does not melt the ice and the water of the ice does not extinguish the fire. They are able to exist in harmony for the purpose of fulfilling God’s will.

Israel, Saudi Arabia Maintain ‘Covert Ties’: Energy Minister
By JNS November 21, 2017 , 7:30 am

Israel has maintained covert contact with Saudi Arabia regarding Iran and other areas of common interest, Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz revealed Sunday.
Although high-ranking Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have often spoken in general terms regarding the budding backdoor diplomatic relations between Israel and Arab states, Steinitz’s comments mark the first official disclosure of the Jewish state’s developing ties with Riyadh.
In an interview Sunday with Army Radio, Steinitz, a member of the Israeli security cabinet, was asked why Israel has kept its ties with Saudi Arabia secret.
“We have ties that are indeed partly covert with many Muslim and Arab countries, and usually [we are] the party that is not ashamed,” said Steinitz.
“It’s the other side that is interested in keeping the ties quiet. With us, usually, there is no problem, but we respect the other side’s wish, when ties are developing, whether it’s with Saudi Arabia or with other Arab countries or other Muslim countries, and there is much more…[but] we keep it secret,” he said.

Mysterious ‘Booms’, Fireballs Appear Around the World. Do They Presage Messiah?
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 20, 2017 , 11:30 am
“Then a spirit carried me away, and behind me I heard a great roaring sound: ‘Blessed is the Presence of Hashem, in His place.’” Ezekiel 3:12 (The Israel Bible™️)
(Shutterstock)
A wave of loud and inexplicable booms thundering in the skies over America and abroad coinciding with dramatic sightings of fireballs has NASA scientists scratching their heads, but Bible-based experts note that these events are explicitly described as preceding the Messiah and End-of-Days.
Last Tuesday, an unmistakeable thundering ‘boom’ shook a wide swathe of northern Alabama at around 1:45 PM local time.
Home video during the “Bama Boom” today at 1:49 p.m. CST…. from Amy Phelps pic.twitter.com/ZQQIL6NmFz
— James Spann (@spann) November 15, 2017
Though the boom was large enough to register on seismographs, geologists ruled out the possibility of a localized tremor. This left scientists to ponder two possibilities: either the Bama Boom, as it was dubbed, was an enormous sonic boom or it was the result of a meteor entering the atmosphere.
Inquiries with aviation authorities, civil and military, were fruitless, leading to the conclusion that the loud sound heard across seven counties was astronomically sourced.
e: loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake. We don’t have an answer, and can only hypothesize with you. 1) sonic boom from aircraft; 2) meteorite w/ current Leonid shower?
— NWS Birmingham (@NWSBirmingham) November 14, 2017
NASA was clearly stymied, confirming the sonic disturbance but unable to offer an explanation for the phenomenon It speculated that the boom “could have been generated by a bolide, larger supersonic aircraft or a ground explosion.” A bolide is a large meteor that explodes in the atmosphere. Eyewitnesses reported a vapor trail, and NASA said that points to a meteor or aircraft, though none was reported to be in the area or detected at the time.

“All Syrians Want to Come to Israel” [VIDEO]
By Abra Forman November 20, 2017 , 10:30 am
“Do not withhold good from one who deserves it When you have the power to do it [for him].” Proverbs 3:27 (The Israel Bible™️)
A Syrian mother carries her sick child into Israel. (Screenshot)
If the border between Israel and Syria opened up, millions of Syrians would want to come to the Jewish State, the mother of a sick child brought to Israel for treatment told Israeli news outlet Chadashot recently.
For the first time, a TV news outlet was permitted by the IDF to film Syrians entering Israel for medical treatment. Several women interviewed were full of extensive praise for Israel, explaining that in light of the country’s humanitarian aid, Israelis, who had once been considered enemies, had become like brothers.
Indeed, this development of goodwill was the ultimate goal of Operation Good Neighbor, a IDF mission begun secretly several years ago to provide aid to Syrians who came to the Syrian-Israeli border seeking medical help.
The operation expanded into a humanitarian aid initiative, with the IDF transferring tons of food, clothes, heating and cooking fuel, and even diapers to Syrians suffering under their country’s ongoing civil war.
To date, Israel has treated about 3,000 Syrians injured in the fighting, and nearly 1,000 children.

Is Iran Trying to Bring Islamic End-of-Days in Syria?
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 20, 2017 , 1:30 pm
“Behold, I am sending My messenger to clear the way before Me, and the Lord whom you seek shall come to His Temple suddenly. As for the angel of the covenant that you desire, he is already coming.” Malachi 3:1 (The Israel Bible™️)

Islamic soldiers seek to conquer Jerusalem. (Screenshot)
Iran is establishing bases in Syria, but according to some sources, their preparations to engage Israel are motivated far more by Messianic aspirations than military or political ones.
Iran has frequently stated its desire to destroy Israel, claiming the Jewish state as the focus of its nuclear and long-range missile program. Iran has also funneled millions of dollars into proxy enemies of Israel, like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
According to Debka, a Middle East military analysis site, Iran is now stepping up its pace, having established 13 military installations in Syria. Some experts see behind this a sinister desire for the end of the world – Islam style.
Indeed, the escalation of Iranian military efforts in Syria are religiously motivated, Ryan Mauro, a political analyst for the Clarion Project, explained in a recent interview.
“This isn’t normal competition between hostile powers, this isn’t even the normal Iranian sponsorship of terrorism or attempts to expand their military presence,” Mauro said. “To the Iranian regime this is the fulfillment of prophecy.”
Mauro pointed out that new Iranian troops are called Ansar al-Mahdi (“Supporters of the Messiah”). It has also created a 313th brigade, into which it is is recruiting young Syrian Shiites. According to tradition in Shiite Islam, 313 is the number of fighters that will arrive with the Mahdi, the Islamic Messiah.
Islam’s tradition holds that Mahdi is the redeemer of Islam. The arrival of Mahdi will coincide with the arrival of the Christian messiah, who will be the Mahdi’s assistant in fighting the Masih ad-Dajjal, the false messiah, or anti-Christ.

India Cancels $500 Million Missile Deal With Israel
By Abra Forman November 20, 2017 , 12:30 pm
“Arrogance yields nothing but strife; Wisdom belongs to those who seek advice.” Proverbs 13:10 (The Israel Bible™️)
A Tamir missile is fired from the Iron Dome missile defense battery during a trial by the US military in New Mexico, April, 2016. (Rafael Advanced Defense Systems)
India has cancelled a massive $500 million deal to purchase 8,000 anti-tank missiles from Israeli defense firm Rafael, Indian press reported on Monday.
India originally selected the Rafael Spike missile system in 2014, choosing to contract with the Israeli government-owned defense firm rather than accept a US offer to purchase its Javelin system.
The deal saw Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which also developed the famous Iron Dome, open a production facility in India with its local partner this past August in order to begin manufacturing the Spike missiles. But according to the Indian Express, the Indian government has decided to turn the project over to the state instead, tasking India’s Defense Research and Development Organization with developing and producing the weapon.
According to ministry sources, the deal to buy the foreign missile system was cancelled so as not to adversely impact India’s domestic program, said the Indian Express.

Sanhedrin/Mount Zion Group Prepares Oil for Third Temple From Amona Olive Trees, Proving Claim to Land
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 16, 2017 , 11:30 am
“And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made, even its base, and its shaft; its cups, its knops, and its flowers, shall be of one piece with it.” Exodus 25:31 (The Israel Bible™️)

In preparation for the Third Temple, the nascent Sanhedrin and the United Temple Movement (UTM) under the auspices of the Mount Zion Association annually prepares olive oil that is ritually pure and ready for use in the Temple, but this year, the olives were harvested from a special orchard, intended to send a special light into the world that adheres to a prophecy with current-day political ramifications.
The oil-making is part of an ongoing effort by the Mount Zion Association to recreate Temple rituals and become familiar with them in every detail, so they can be reinstated without delay, should the need arise in the near future. But making this olive oil is also an effort to bring about prophecy as written in the Bible.
On Sunday, volunteers will harvest olives for Temple oil in the orchards of Amona, a Jewish community in the Biblical region assigned to the tribe of Benjamin.

Amona was established in 1995 but a long legal battle initiated by the anti-Israel nongovernmental organization Peace Now culminated in 3,000 Jews being forcibly evicted from their homes. Amona was destroyed in several stages, the final evictions being carried out in January of 2017.
While the homes were destroyed, trees planted by the Jewish farmers were left standing. The Sanhedrin and UTM will go out to those orchards and harvest the olives to process for use in the Temple. Knesset Member Rabbi Yehudah Glick is expected to participate.
Rabbi Hillel Weiss, spokesman for the nascent Sanhedrin, explained that planting trees is one method of proving ownership of land, described in the Book of Jeremiah.

.Israel Offers Earthquake Aid to Iran, Is Immediately Rebuffed

Israel offered humanitarian aid to Iran in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck the border region with Iraq earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told North American Jewish leaders overnight Tuesday. The offer was immediately turned down.
“I am proud to announce tonight that a few hours ago I directed that we offer the Red Cross medical assistance for the Iraqi and Iranian victims of this disaster,” Netanyahu said via videolink to the Jewish Federations of North America’s annual General Assembly in Los Angeles.
“I’ve said many times that we have no quarrel with the people of Iran. Our quarrel is only with the tyrannical regime that holds them hostage and threatens our destruction,” Netanyahu said. “But our humanity is greater than their hatred. Israel continues to be a light unto the nations and this is what I am proud of. And all of you can be proud of Israel’s morals, and Israel’s might.”
Iran has not commented on the offer, but Ynet quoted sources in the Prime Minister’s Office as saying that the offer was part of a strategy to communicate “directly with the Iranian people and underline the difference between the people and the country’s regime.”
“Israel contacted the Red Cross with the intention of providing civilian humanitarian assistance but was immediately turned away, which reveals the true face of the radical regime in Iran,” the source said.
At least 540 people were killed and close to 8,000 injured when the quake hit Sunday.

In Unprecedented Move, Israel Co-Sponsors Saudi UN Resolution Against Syria

In an unprecedented move, Israel on Tuesday co-sponsored a draft resolution against Syria that was submitted by Saudi Arabia at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The resolution, which was also backed by the U.S., France and Germany, passed with an overwhelming majority of 108 countries voting in favor, 17 voting against and 58 abstaining.
Although Israel has previously supported resolutions submitted by Saudi Arabia at the U.N., it has never signed on as a co-sponsor.
In a statement delivered prior to the vote, Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the U.N. Abdallah Al-Mouallimi slammed the “the grave deterioration in the state of human rights in Syria.”
When the list of the resolution’s co-sponsors was read aloud, Syria’s U.N. envoy, Bashar al-Jaafari, mockingly congratulated Riyadh for Israel’s direct involvement, stating that it served as evidence of a secret Israeli-Saudi alliance. The Syrian ambassador also accused all of the resolution’s co-sponsors of supporting terrorism.
“The Assad regime, with full support from Iran, has been slaughtering its people mercilessly and with incomprehensible cruelty for years,” Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon responded. “Israel, which for years has been providing humanitarian aid to Syrian civilians hurt by these atrocities, stands together with the international community against this murderous regime.”

On Saturday, the Museum of the Bible in Washington DC will open its doors to the public, exploring the greatest book ever written and featuring a hands-on exhibit intended to connect the visitors physically with the Holy Land.
The museum partnered with the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) to bring approximately 800 artifacts from Israel to the U.S. This was the first time the IAA has created a permanent exhibit of archeological pieces outside of Israel. Perhaps the most impressive is an enormous stone from the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Visitors to the museum are encouraged to connect with the holiest city in the world by touching the stone.

After Decades of Struggle, 69 Ethiopian Jews Come Home to Israel
By Abra Forman November 16, 2017 , 12:30 pm

On Wednesday night, 69 Ethiopian Jews fulfilled their decades-long dream of making aliyah, or returning home to the Jewish state. Landing at Ben Gurion airport, the newcomers were met by hundreds of ecstatic family members, Israeli youth groups dancing and singing, and activists who are working to bring more Ethiopians home.
The date of their arrival fell on the second anniversary of the Israeli government’s unanimous approval of a resolution to bring Ethiopia’s remaining 9,000 Jews back to Israel. However, implementation of the resolution was halted after the government said it did not have the funding for the project.
Since then, several small groups of Ethiopians have managed to make aliyah with the help of the International Christian Embassy of Jerusalem (IFCJ), a pro-Israel Christian organization which donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Israeli foundations for the purpose of sponsoring and supporting Ethiopian aliyah.

Are ‘Mitochondrial Eve’ and ‘Y-Chromosomal Adam’ Science’s Confirmation of Creation?
By Yehezkel Laing November 10, 2017 , 7:30 am
“The man named his wife Chava, because she was the mother of all the living.” Genesis 3:20 (The Israel Bible™️)
Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, by Tintoretto, 1550. (Wikimedia Commons)
Following the recent trend of congruence between science and Bible in different fields, fresh genetic research suggests that all females are descended from a single female and all males from a single male – corresponding with the Biblical account of Adam and Eve.
For many years the multiregional hypothesis, suggesting multiple origins for humanity, was predominant in genetic research. But new studies suggest that all of humanity has a common origin.
“The Torah has always claimed one common ancestor to all humanity as well as creation ex-nilo,” Rabbi Avraham Arieh Trugman told Breaking Israel News in response to the finding. “Recent discoveries in these fields seem to confirm these truths.”
The theory was first developed in 1987, when leading science journal Nature published a study investigating humanity’s origins. The study researched mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down from mother to both daughter and son. Because mitochondrial DNA is only passed on by the mother and never the father, it reveals maternal lineage. Knowing this, the researchers were able to determine that every human being alive today can trace their ancestry back to a single woman now referred to as “Mitochondrial Eve.” The original research placed Eve somewhere in East Africa between 140,000 and 200,000 years ago.

The Hypocrisy of Canceling Hotovely’s Princeton Talk
By Ben-Dror Yemini November 16, 2017 , 7:00 am
More and more speeches by right-wing speakers at US campuses are being canceled. I don’t usually share their views, but how is this silencing okay?
Last week, it happened to Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, who was scheduled to give a speech at Princeton University’s Center for Jewish Life, which is affiliated with the Hillel network of Jewish organizations. I spoke there myself earlier this year.
A Jewish group called Alliance of Jewish Progressives (AJP) organized a petition accusing Hotovely of “stating her opposition to a Palestinian state” and “repeatedly making racist statements.” The Hillel people panicked and canceled the speech, which was eventually delivered at the Chabad center in Princeton. Attendance was impressive, perhaps in protest of the silencing. Hillel International President Eric Fingerhut soon came to his senses and issued an apology to Hotovely.
image: https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/28-BIN-OpEd-Experts-300x2501-300x250.png
I swear that my political opinions on the settlements are the exact opposite of Hotovely’s opinions, but I haven’t found a hint of racism in her comments.

Egyptologists Discover Pits Filled With Giant Severed Hands in “Joseph’s Palace”
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 14, 2017 , 1:30 pm
“David gave orders to the young men, who killed them; they cut off their hands and feet and hung them up by the pool in Chevron. And they took the head of Ish-boshet and buried it in the grave of Avner at Chevron.” II Samuel 4:12 (The Israel Bible™️)
The pit of severed hands uncovered at Avaris, Egypt. (Australian Archaeological Institute/Excavation Report)
A creepy find by egyptologists of a pit full of ancient severed hands confirms a theory about a disturbing ancient Egyptian practice. The find connects fleetingly with the Bible, appearing in what some believe to be the throne room of Biblical Joseph.
Egyptologists discovered 16 severed hands in the grounds surrounding buried in four pits in an ancient palace in Avaris, Egypt. The scientists estimated the hands had been separated from their rightful owners approximately 3,600 years ago. All were right hands and remarkably large.
The find was indeed gruesome but not entirely surprising for the egyptologists, as it confirmed their belief that soldiers would cut off the hands of defeated enemies and present them to noblemen in return for a gold bounty. Hieroglyphics have been discovered depicting this practice.
“You deprive him of his power eternally,” head archaeologist Austrian Manfred Bietak explained of the practice in an interview with Archaeology News Network . “Our evidence is the earliest evidence and the only physical evidence at all. Each pit represents a ceremony.”
Two of the pits, each containing one hand, are in what researchers believe is a throne room of a palace at Avaris.

IDF Deploys Iron Dome After Threat From Palestinian Islamic Jihad

The IDF said it deployed Iron Dome missile defense batteries throughout central Israel on Monday amid the Gaza-based Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist group’s threat that it will avenge Israel’s recent destruction of a cross-border attack tunnel.
Ten PIJ operatives, including two senior commanders, were killed during Israel’s operation to destroy the tunnel. PIJ stated that Israel’s “threats to target the movement’s leadership is a declaration of war, which we will confront.”
The terror group’s threat came after Israeli Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai warned PIJ not to retaliate for the tunnel’s destruction, stating that “any attack by the Islamic Jihad will be met with a powerful and determined Israeli response, not only against the Jihad, but also against Hamas,” which controls Gaza.

A Jihad Grows in Florida
By Daniel Greenfield November 9, 2017 , 8:00 am
“The racist president who is a supremacist — white, who does not like Blacks, does not like the Chinese, he does not like the Muslims, he doesn’t like the Hispanics,” Vicente Adolfo Solano declared in Spanish, standing in front an ISIS flag. “In the name of Allah and our leader, Abu, we are going to defeat you.”
Solano, a 53-year-old Honduran living in Miami, seemed like an unlikely candidate to join ISIS.
But there he is on video lashing out at President Trump. Solano was resentful over his “temporary immigration status”. Hondurans living in the United States had been automatically converted to “refugees” after Hurricane Mitch in 1999. Temporary Protected Status for the eighteen-year hurricane refugees expires in Jan 2018. And President Trump appears unwilling to extend it any further.
Even if Solano was here under TPS, he should still have been deported due to his criminal record. But instead, he remained here and was so furious at the country that had taken him in that he joined ISIS.
Solano was caught with an inert pressure cooker bomb at the Dolphin Mall. His goal was to set off the bomb in the crowded food court to kill as many Americans as he could. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the start of the Christmas shopping season, was to be a day of unforgettable horror.
“I am going to plant a bomb like in Boston, in the name of Allah,” he had declared. “Like in Boston, like Suarez wanted to do in the Keys, that’s how they’re going to get it, and even worse.”
The Boston Marathon bombing is familiar to most Americans. Harlem Suarez is more obscure. But it’s not hard to see why Solano would have identified with the Latino Islamic terror convert.
Suarez had been sentenced to life in prison this year for a plot to detonate a backpack bomb on a Key West beach in Florida. “Kill our enemies and convert to Islam now in USA,” Suarez had urged.
“We will destroy America and divide it in two. We will raise our black flag on top of your White House,” he had boasted in a video.
The judge who sentenced Suarez had dismissed him as a clown. His family and the media had suggested that this was yet another case of the FBI entrapping a “naïve” young Muslim. And that wasn’t hard to do considering the emergence of some of his attempted ISIS recordings which began with, “In the name of Allah, the most — uh, wait, hold on. F___!” But the Solano case shows that he has become an inspiration to Latino converts to Islam. Suarez had desperately wanted to recruit other terrorists.
And he succeeded.
Bombing the Dolphin Mall had originally been Suarez’s idea. He had suggested planting bombs there to an undercover informant. Now one of his fans actually tried to follow through with the idea.
Solano and Suarez aren’t aberrations. Also this year, James Gonzalo Medina pleaded guilty to a bomb plot aimed at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center. He will likely be sentenced in November. His lawyers and the media tried to blame a ‘brain cyst’ and assorted flavors of mental illness. But it wasn’t mental illness that caused Medina to change his name to James Muhammad.
“I feel that I’m doing it for a good cause for Allah,” he had explained.
n one of his videos, Medina/Muhammad had declared, “I am a Muslim and I don’t like what is going on in this world. I’m going to handle business here in America. Aventura, watch your back. ISIS is in the house.”

The Enemies of Kurdistan are the Enemies of the US
By Sarah N. Stern November 9, 2017 , 9:00 am
“The Kurds have no friends but the mountains,” goes a traditional Kurdish saying. No friends but the mountains and Israel would be more accurate.
Israel stood alone when its political leadership embraced the Kurdish quest for self-determination. A “brave, pro-Western people who share our values,” is how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the Kurds. The deep affinity is mutual. Israeli flags were raised during pro-independence rallies in the Kurdistan region, the US and across Europe.
But less than two months after the Kurds voted by an overwhelming margin of 93% in favor of breaking away from Iraq, the Kurdish dream of independence lies in ruins. On Tuesday, Iraq’s parliament in Baghdad voted to criminalize flying the Israeli flag in the country, accusing the Mossad of orchestrating the Kurdish independence referendum to establish a second Israel in the Middle East.
The move comes after Kurdish forces had come under fire by Iranian-backed militia in mid-October, supported by elements of the Iraqi army, in the northern city of Kirkuk. The forces that rolled into Kurdish territory in the early hours of the morning were driving US-made Humvees, supplied by Washington to the central government in Baghdad for the fight against Islamic State (ISIS).
Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s supreme spymaster – a man who thrives on chaos and destruction – had met the day before with Iraqi Kurdistan’s main opposition party in Sulaimaniya and left the leadership of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Party (PUK) with a simple choice: surrender Kirkuk or face the unrestrainable brutality of his forces. PUK withdrew without resistance and surrendered the oilfields of Kirkuk – the lifeline of an independent Kurdistan – to the invading forces.
The assault on Kirkuk didn’t happen in a vacuum.

Israel’s Bountiful Wine Harvest Fulfills Joel 2:24 as World Production Drops [WATCH]

While global wine production has fallen to historic lows, barrels in Israel’s wineries are overflowing with a blessed harvest that fulfills prophecy in the most undeniable way.
Zachary Waller, Executive Director of HaYovel, first noticed this blessing of bounty when his organization brought Christian volunteers this summer to help with the grape harvest in Har Bracha, as it has done every season for the last twelve years. It was time to harvest but the grapes weren’t yet ripe. Waller was concerned there wouldn’t be enough work for his 200 eager volunteers.
“Before the harvest, it’s difficult to tell how many grapes there are and what condition they are in until you are actually out in the vineyards and have your hands on the vines,” Waller told Breaking Israel News. “It seemed like one week later, all the grapes ripened at once, and once we started picking, it quickly became clear there were a lot.”

According to a recent poll, an overwhelming majority – 72 percent – of Jewish Israelis think that Israel should maintain its sovereignty over the Temple Mount in future diplomatic negotiations.
The poll also found that 68 percent of Jewish Israelis think that it is important for Jews to be allowed to pray on the Temple Mount, while only 32 percent believed that Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount is not important.
Unlike Muslims, who enjoy full rights on the Temple Mount, Jews are permitted to visit but may be arrested if caught praying.

Netanyahu on Returning Terrorists’ Bodies: “There Are No Free Gifts”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel would not return the held bodies of five Palestinian terrorists to its enemies unless Hamas gives up the remains of IDF soldiers being held in Gaza.
Speaking in Migdal Ha’Emek, where he was attending the signing of a new masterplan for the town, Netanyahu appeared to hint that Israel would not return the bodies of five Islamic Jihad terrorists found on the Israeli side of the border when the IDF demolished a cross-border tunnel on October 30th, unless significant progress was made regarding remains of Israeli soldiers being held in Gaza.

“There are no free gifts. We will bring our boys home. I’ll say it again, there are no free gifts,” Netanyahu saidIn what appeared to be a response to Islamic Jihad, which issued a statement Sunday saying that the “bodies would not remain in Israel’s hands for long,” Netanyahu said, “We have a mission to defend the land and we do so with one simple rule: Whoever attempts to attack us, we will attack them.”
Earlier Monday, Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz told Army Radio: “It should be perfectly clear – We will not transfer any bodies of terrorists without the remains of IDF soldiers being returned to the state of Israel.”
Katz also commented on a petition to the High Court for Justice filed Sunday by the family of Lt. Hadar Goldin, whose remains have been held by Hamas in Gaza since the war of 2014.

Rabbi-Led Charity Puts Biblical Mandate to Comfort Israel’s People Into Practice
By Orly Gibson November 7, 2017 , 11:30 am
“Comfort, oh comfort My people, says your God.” Isaiah 40:1 (The Israel Bible™️)

Established by the Israel365 advocacy organization, the Israel Charity Fund (ICF) has a single purpose: giving Israel supporters around the world the opportunity to fulfill the Biblical directive to care for the people of Israel by donating funds and sending goodwill to the victims of Arab and Palestinian terrorism.
Every year, innocent Israelis experience loss and trauma at the hands of fundamentalist Arab terrorists. Lovers of Israel looking for practical ways to support Israeli victims of terror often find themselves at a loss of how to help or where to donate funds.
The ICF works with supporters and friends of Israel around the world to collect and distribute funds directly to individuals, families, and communities across Israel which have been affected by terror attacks, often jumping into action to create emergency campaigns within hours or days of attacks.
“One of the saddest realities of the prophetic return of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel has been the incessant terror attacks against innocent Israelis which have been ongoing for decades,” explained Israel365 founder and CEO Rabbi Tuly Weisz to Breaking Israel News.
“While the news of these attacks leaves the world shocked and heartbroken, it is vital to respond by comforting and supporting the terror victims of Israel.”
2017 was a year of several brutal attacks against Israelis in which the ICF leapt into action to provide for the financial needs of terror victims.
Terror struck right at the beginning of the year. On January 8th, four soldiers were killed as a terrorist rammed his truck into a group of soldiers in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood of Jerusalem. Sarah Kempler, a female IDF soldier, was among the fifteen soldiers injured in the attack.

Just days later, Rabbi Weisz personally visited Sarah in her home in Samaria. On behalf of the generous donors of the ICF, Rabbi Weisz comforted Sarah on the tragic loss of her friends and comrades and provided her with funds to be used in her rehabilitation process.
In July, the world was appalled by the heinous terrorist attack in which 70-year-old Yosef Salomon was murdered in cold blood along with his adult children Chaya and Elad in their family home in Neve Tzuf. Elad Salmon left behind a wife and five young orphans.

UN Watch, an international human rights group, is calling on the U.S. to launch an investigation into Rutgers University’s Prof. Mazen Adi, who has deep ties with the Syrian government and has accused Israel of organ trafficking.
“The U.S. government needs to investigate how a long-time agent of the Syrian regime, close ally of Iran, was granted a visa to work and teach in America,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.
“It ought to be a matter of profound concern that an American university would allow an apologist for the Syrian regime’s genocide to be a teacher,” he said.
Adi joined Rutgers University as an adjunct professor in 2015. He teaches international criminal law, political science, and United Nations and global policy studies.
According to The Algemeiner, the Rutgers professor has deep ties to the Assad regime, working for the Syrian Foreign Ministry in various roles since 1998, including as a diplomat and legal adviser at Syria’s U.N. Mission from 2007-2014.

Following USA’s UNESCO Pull-Out, Haley Puts UN Human Rights Council on Notice

Following the United States’ withdrawal from one United Nations body last month, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said that unless the Human Rights Council (UNHRC) reforms its Israel-bashing ways, the US will leave it as well.

Among the US’s demanded reforms is the removal of Item 7, a permanent agenda point requiring discussion of Israel’s actions in Judea and Samaria at every single UNHRC session. Item 7 is essentially a built-in forum for criticizing Israel.

The US also wants restrictions against major human rights abusers joining the council, Haley said, pointing to the recent addition of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The Human Rights Council will either adopt these reforms, or the United States will leave,” declared Haley on Saturday night.

Speaking at the annual Washington conference of the Israeli American Council, Haley was enthusiastically received by a community which increasingly sees her as the rehabilitator of Israel at the United Nations.

She said that the US would never again repeat the “betrayal” of the Obama administration, which during its last days in power abandoned Israel at the UN by allowing an anti-settlement resolution at the Security Council to pass.

PA Head Abbas to Meet With Egypt’s El-Sisi to Talk Palestinian-Israeli Peace

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas is set to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Monday for discussions on advancing Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, the Jerusalem Post reported, citing a Palestinian diplomat.
The two leaders were also both scheduled to attend the World Youth Forum in the Sinai Peninsula’s Sharm El Sheikh resort town on Sunday.
Abbas last met with the Egyptian President on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held his first public meeting with El-Sisi at the same U.N. gathering.
In addition to playing a mediating role between Israel and the Palestinians, El-Sisi’s government has arbitrated between rival Palestinian factions—the PA-ruling Fatah party and the Gaza-controlling terror group Hamas—throughout their current attempt to form a unity government.
Egypt will host a meeting of senior Palestinian officials in late November to resolve remaining obstacles to forming the unity government, including Hamas’s refusal to disarm.
In September, separate Hamas and Fatah delegations visited Cairo for meetings with Egyptian officials amid Palestinian reconciliation efforts.

Halloween’s History of Pagan Devil Worship Scaring Off Jewish, Christian Trick-or-Treaters

“When you enter the land that Hashem your God is giving you, you shall not learn to imitate the abhorrent practices of those nations.” Deuteronomy 18:9 (The Israel Bible™️)

Though the secular holiday of Halloween has become enormously popular, its pagan roots go very deep, and some of its more disturbing dark-magic elements may be making a comeback. With connections to necromancy, religious Jews do not participate in what most Americans see as a family-oriented holiday, and many Christians are following suit.

Halloween began as Samhain (pronounced Sow-in), one of the four main pagan holidays celebrated by the Celtics, who lived in areas of Ireland, northern England, and France before Romans conquered the region in the first century CE. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year.

Similar to modern Halloween, Celtic pagans dressed up in costumes on Samhain and lit bonfires. Samhain was seen as a liminal time, when the boundary between this world and the spirit world could more easily be crossed. As such, it was an auspicious time for summoning dark spirits to aid in necromancy, communicating with the dead to foretell the future, a practice explicitly prohibited in the Bible.

Let no one be found among you who consigns his son or daughter to the fire, or who is an augur, a soothsayer, a diviner, a sorcerer, one who casts spells, or one who consults ghosts or familiar spirits, or one who inquires of the dead. Deuteronomy 18:10-11

Samhain was celebrated from sundown October 31 to sundown November 1, as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. People believed that on Samhain, spirits roamed the world, and gifts of food and wine would be left out to appease the spirits. When people left their houses at night, they wore masks so they would be mistaken for fellow ghosts.

In what is widely believed to be an effort to subsume the Celtic pagan holiday into the Christian religion, in 1000 C.E. the church declared November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day honoring the dead. The night before All Souls’ Day was re-adopted in the Celtic region, with the name changed from Samhain to All Hallows’ Eve.

The holiday became popular in America in the second half of the nineteenth century with a wave of Irish immigration resulting from the potato famine. Today, it is the second most popular holiday for spending money in the US: Americans shell out $2.5 billion on costumes and an additional $3.5 billion on candy.

While many Americans insist that Halloween is a secular, family-oriented holiday, because of its clear origins in paganism and its connection with forbidden necromancy, most halachic (Torah law) authorities prohibit observant Jews from participating in Halloween.

A parallel revulsion to the pagan holiday has developed in recent years within Christianity. Despite the historical process of Samhain being incorporated into the Church, there is a growing movement among Christians to move away from Halloween. Indeed, according to a survey taken by Lifeway Research, 67 percent of pastors suggest that church members take an alternative approach to the holiday, centered around a church event, while eight percent of pastors tell church members to skip the holiday entirely.

The Church of Satan, the first organized church in modern times to be devoted to the figure of Satan, perceives Halloween as an opportunity for the average American to indulge in secret Satanist fantasies. On its website, the church claims that Halloween is “the night when the mundane folk try to reach down inside and touch the ‘darkness’, which for Satanists is a daily mode of existence.” They claim that by dressing in costume, the average American is taking “a brief dip into the pool of the ‘shadow world.’”

There are in fact strong hints that even in popular culture the occult and pagan aspects of the holiday have not been left behind. Due to the myth that black cats bring bad luck, they have the lowest adoption rates of any other pet and the highest euthanasia rates. Despite this troubling statistic, in many states, people seeking to adopt black cats from animal shelters before Halloween are routinely turned away for fear the feline will be used in a black-magic ritual.

Italy’s Apocalypse
By Daniel Pipes November 5, 2017 , 7:00 am
ROME – When thinking about migrants and Islam, Italy is not a country that comes to mind.

Unlike its northern neighbors, Italy had no economic miracle that required the massive importation of labor. It lacks a deep bond to some major source of migration, such as South Asia for Great Britain. It has not experienced major acts of jihadi violence such as France has. Unlike Sweden, one does not hear tales of crazy appeasement and unlike Belgium, there are no partial no-go zones. Unlike the Netherlands, no flamboyant anti-Islamic politician has emerged comparable to Geert Wilders and unlike Germany, no anti-immigration party has become a significant political force.

But, no less than its northern counterparts, Italy deserves attention for it is undergoing massive changes. Arguably, they are even more pressing, far-reaching, and denied more than in the better-known countries.

For starters, there’s geography. Not only does Italy’s famous boot stick prominently into the Mediterranean Sea, making the country a tempting target for sea-borne illegal migrants, but Italian territory reaches into North Africa: the small island of Lampedusa, population 6,000, lies just 70 miles (113 km) off the coast of Tunisia and 184 miles (300 km) from Libya. In 2016, 181,000 migrants entered Italy, nearly all of them illegal, nearly all by sea.

It was challenging enough when Libya’s Muammar Qaddafi turned the migrant flow on and off, thereby winning concessions from Italy in a game that anticipated what Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan now plays with Germany. But since Qaddafi’s overthrow in October 2011, the anarchy in Libya presents even greater problems. At least Qaddafi could efficiently be paid off; how much more difficult to deal with a myriad of local strongmen and people-smugglers.

Exacerbating the trend toward what the French intellectual Renaud Camus calls a grand replacement of populations, 285,000 Italians left their homeland in 2016, a major increase over prior years.

Then there’s history. The Muslim presence in Sicily lasted nearly five centuries, 827-1300, and although less celebrated than Andalusia, Islamists remember that era and want Sicily back. Rome, the seat of the Catholic Church, represents a paramount symbol of Islamist ire and ambition, making it highly likely to be a target of jihadi violence.

Demographic trends are even worse than in northern Europe, with a Total Fertility Rate (the number of children per woman) of 1.3, well below that of neighboring France (2.0). The journalist Giulio Meotti tells me that the migrant TFR is almost 2.0 and the indigenous Italian is about 0.9. Some small towns face extinction; one of them, Candela, which has seen its population shrink from 8,000 in the 1990s to 2,700 today, has responded by offering cold cash to induce economically productive immigrants to settle there. Italy’s health minister, Beatrice Lorenzin, has called the demographic trend “an apocalypse.”

In combination, these factors spell a civilizational crisis for Italy. But the wall of denial is close to complete. Yes, the Northern League and the Five-Star Movement oppose unfettered immigration but this is not their focus. However lopsided and dismissive the debate about immigration and Islamism in the north, it is yet worse in Italy. Voices that confronted these issues a decade ago, such as Magdi Allam, Oriana Fallaci, Fiamma Nirenstein, Emanuele Ottolenghi, and Marcello Pera, no longer resonate. Denial prevails.

Pope Francis has established himself as a leading advocate of unimpeded migration and the uncritical welcoming of migrants, rendering more difficult a sensible discussion of this issue. Adding to the political drift, the clueless government of Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni promotes standard left-wing bromides, barely acknowledging the tectonic shift now underway.

After traveling to 12 cities and towns in Italy, I came away with the impression that the crisis is just too awful for most Italians to cope with. (American readers might compare this to their countrymen’s reluctance to confront the threat of electromagnetic pulse.) A vignette captured the new Italy for me in a park in Padua: A statue is surrounded by four benches. Seven elderly Italian women squeeze onto one bench while eight African men spread out on the other three benches. This scene summed up both mutual distaste and the migrants’ abundant sense of superiority.

What will it take for Italians to wake up and begin to deal with the demographic and civilizational catastrophe facing their uniquely attractive culture? My guess: A major jihadi attack in Rome.

WATCH: US ambassador to UN vows to end ‘betrayal’ of Israel under Obama administration
November 5, 2017
Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the UN, addressed the Israeli American Council (IAC) National Conference in Washington, DC and vowed that the “cowardly act” of allowing passage of Resolution 2334, which labelled Israel a violator of international law, was “an act of betrayal [that] would never happen again.”

16 Israeli Charities Receive $2.1 Million at John Hagee Ministries’ “Night to Honor Israel” [VIDEO]
By Eliana Rudee November 5, 2017 , 10:30 am
“All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, because you have obeyed My command.” Genesis 22:18 (The Israel Bible™️)

Pastor John Hagee speaks at the 36th annual Night to Honor Israel in San Antonio, Texas. (Screenshot)
At this year’s 36th Annual A Night To Honor Israel event at the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, held by John Hagee Ministries (JHM), 16 charity and non-profit Israeli and Jewish organizations were presented with more than $2.1 in donations.

Each year, the donations from JHM’s national television audience are given out at this annual event to allow various non-profit organizations to continue their work for Israel and the Jewish people. Carrying out the Biblical mandate to bless Israel, JHM has raised over $100 million for Israeli and Jewish charities. At the 2015 “Night to Honor Israel” event, JHM presented $3.2 Million to 23 Israeli charities, and at the event in 2016, the organization gave $2.2 million to 21 charities.

Pastor John Hagee is the founder and Senior Pastor of Cornerstone Church and the founder of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the largest pro-Israel grassroots organization in the US. A Night To Honor Israel also sets records as one of the longest-running Christian Zionist events in America.

This year, Pastor John Hagee’s address focused on the Iran nuclear deal, lauding President Donald Trump’s efforts “to change the Iran nuclear agreement or cancel the agreement.”

Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg of Congregation Rodfei Sholom praised Pastor John Hagee for his support of Israel. Through the establishment of this annual event, Rabbi Scheinberg said, Hagee has declared, “Israel, you are not alone. Christians support you, America supports you, we love you, and we shall stand by you.”

He concluded, “Jews count by increments of 18, which is the number for life. Tonight the 36th anniversary of the Night to Honor Israel reminds us of the life and love that Pastor Hagee has infused both in Christians and Jews.”

Cornerstone Church’s Executive Pastor and the son of Pastor John Hagee, Matt Hagee, focused his address on the Biblical imperative to support and bless Israel. “Just as Christians teach our children the importance of being kind to the stranger, the widow and the orphan, so too must we teach them that Christians have a Biblical mandate to stand with Israel. As any parent will tell you, the best way to instill values in the next generation is to lead by example, and we hope that when young men and women see JHM’s efforts to support Israel and its people they will take note and do likewise when they are able,” he said.

This year, these were the organizations honored by JHM and the amounts they received:

On Friday, the Al Qaeda affiliated Al Nusra Front attacked Hader. At least nine Druze from the village were killed and another 23 wounded when the terror group detonated a car bomb. Hundreds of Israeli Druze rioted in the city of Majdal Shams in protest. At least ten men managed to penetrate a gate in the border fence and but they were stopped by IDF before they entered Syrian territory. They were returned to Israel and turned over to the police.
Druze Knesset Member Dr. Akram Hasson, of the Kulanu party, said four of his relatives died in the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a similar statement on his Facebook page on Friday, saying, “A brief update from London: we continue to keep security, on our borders in the south and north as well as the sympathy for our Druze brothers. Shabbat Shalom to all of you!”

Lebanese PM Resigns Under Threat of Assassination, Blasts Iran’s Chokehold on Region [VIDEO]
By JNI Media November 5, 2017 , 8:30 am
“I hear the whisperings of many, intrigue on every side, as they scheme together against me, plotting to take my life.” Psalms 31:14 (The Israel Bible™️)
Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri (Kremlin)
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri on Saturday appeared on Al-Arabiya news network from Saudi Arabia to announce his resignation from government, vowing that “Iran’s hands in the region will be cut off,” Naharnet and AFP reported. “Wherever Iran is present it plants discord and destruction attested to by its interference in the Arab countries,” Hariri said.
Hariri, 47, is a Sunni Muslim, and as such the enemy of the Shiite Iranian regime and its satellite terror organization Hezbollah. His father, Rafik Hariri, Lebanon’s Prime Minister from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2000 until his resignation in 2004, was assassinated in 2005—most likely by Hezbollah, after accusing Iran and Hezbollah of plotting to take over the Middle East. Saad Hariri also held the PM’s office for two terms, from 2009 to 2011, and from December 2016 until today.

85,000 Gather to Commemorate 22nd Anniversary of Rabin’s Murder
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 5, 2017 , 3:59 am
1 The righteous man perishes, And no one considers; Pious men are taken away, And no one gives thought That because of evil The righteous was taken away.” Isaiah 57:1 (The Israel Bible™️)

An estimated 85,000 people gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv on Saturday night to commemorate the passing of Yitzchak Rabin who was assassinated in 1995 during his second term as the prime minister of Israel. The rally, held under the title “We Are One People”, was less focused on left-wing politics than previous gatherings in memory of Rabin, and several right-wing speakers were invited to speak.
This year’s rally was organized by the Darkenu movement and Commanders for Israel’s Security (CIS). Darkenu describes itself as “the moderate majority” while CIS is an Israeli movement of ex-senior security officials. They are both centrist advocacy groups that support “separation” from the Palestinians as part of a two-state solution.
Despite the efforts of the organizers to maintain a neutral atmosphere, the rally retained its left-wing character. When Oded Revivi, the Chief Foreign Envoy of the YESHA (Yehuda and Samaria) Council, took the podium, he was greeted by loud boos.
“Despite the protesting voices in Tel Aviv, and I know there were some, the organizers of the rally extended their hand and invited me to speak on this platform,” Revivi said to the crowd. “And despite the protesting voices on the mountain, and you know there were some, I came down to the square.”

Theresa May Praises UK’s Role in Creation of Israel as Nations Mark Balfour Centennial

Marking the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, British Prime Minister Theresa May praised her country’s role in helping pave the way for the creation of the state of Israel.

At a dinner attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as a host of other British and Israeli dignitaries, May said the U.K. is proud “of the relationship we have built with Israel,” and called for “renewed resolve to support a lasting peace that is in the interests of both Israelis and Palestinians.”

Netanyahu, who is on a five-day visit to the U.K., said in response that Israel is “committed to peace” and that “the Palestinians should finally accept the Jewish national home and finally accept the Jewish state. And when they do, the road to peace will be infinitely closer. In my opinion, peace will be achievable.”

“A hundred years ago, the Balfour Declaration helped pave the way for the re-establishment of an independent state for the Jewish people in our ancestral homeland,” he added. “A hundred years later, our two countries, our two democracies—Israel and Britain—are strong allies and partners.”

Issued in November 1917, the Balfour Declaration offered Britain’s support for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.”

The U.K.’s political opposition leader, Jeremy Corbyn—whose Labour party has been dogged by allegations of anti-Semitism in recent years—did not attend the Balfour centennial dinner. Corbyn, who in the past has described the Hamas and Hezbollah terror groups as “our friends,” citied pre-existing engagements for his non-attendance, which some viewed as a snub of Netanyahu.

Corbyn also called for the British government to recognize Palestinian statehood.

“Balfour promised to help establish a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine while pledging that nothing would be done to prejudice the rights of its ‘existing non-Jewish communities,’” Corbyn said in a statement.

“A hundred years on,” he said, “the second part of Britain’s pledge has still not been fulfilled and Britain’s historic role means we have a special responsibility to the Palestinian people, who are still denied their basic rights.”

Netanyahu, meanwhile, on Friday opened trading at the London Stock Exchange and said he “spoke with dozens of business people who love Israel and invest in Israel.”

“I told them: invest more and bring your friends too,” said Netanyahu. “There is great admiration for Israel [in the U.K.], and considerable success.”

Joshua ‘Stopped the Sun’ With Eclipse on October 30, 1207 BCE
By Abra Forman October 31, 2017 , 12:30 pm
“Yehoshua addressed Hashem; he said in the presence of the Israelites: ‘Stand still, O sun, at Givon, O moon, in the Valley of Aijalon!’” Joshua 10:12 (The Israel Bible™️)
Joshua commands the sun to stand still (Wikimedia Commons)
The Biblical patriarch Joshua ‘stopped the sun’ on October 30, 1207 BCE by way of a solar eclipse that may have been the first recorded in history, Cambridge researchers announced Monday.
In a paper published in the scientific journal Astronomy and Geophysics earlier this month, researchers from England’s Cambridge University confirmed a theory first suggested by Ben Gurion University researchers last January: that Joshua’s miraculous ‘stopping of the sun’ during battle to allow the Israelites more time to defeat their enemies was actually an annular solar eclipse.
They even pinpointed the exact date – the afternoon of October 30, precisely 3,224 years ago
In the Biblical account, Joshua led the Israelites into battle with the armies of five kings in order to help the besieged Gibeonites, with whom they had signed a pact. As the Israelites began to gain the upper hand, Joshua prayed for the sun and the moon to stand still in order to complete the defeat. His prayers were answered.
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. Joshua 10:13
The Cambridge researchers understood this passage as an important historical account.
“If these words are describing a real observation, then a major astronomical event was being reported,” said paper co-author Professor Sir Colin Humphreys from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. “The question for us to figure out is what the text actually means.”

Hamas Terror Tunnel Discovered Under UN-Run School in Gaza
By JNS October 31, 2017 , 8:30 am

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) stated Saturday that it had discovered a Hamas terror tunnel located underneath one of the U.N. body’s schools in the Gaza Strip.
The tunnel was reportedly discovered around two weeks ago, and prompted the U.N. agency to close the school while it sealed the tunnel’s opening. According to UNWRA, the school was reopened Oct. 25.
“The presence of a tunnel underneath an UNRWA installation, which enjoys inviolability under international law, is unacceptable. It places children and agency staff at risk,” UNWRA said in a statement.
UNWRA did not specify where the tunnel led to, where it was discovered and who was responsible for its construction.

100 Years Later, Australians Recreate Historic Calvalry Charge for Beersheba
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz November 1, 2017 , 1:30 pm
“Hence that place was called Be’er Sheva, for there the two of them swore an oath.” Genesis 21:31 (The Israel Bible™️)

On Tuesday, exactly one hundred years after the Australian 4th Cavalry Light Horse Brigade conducted its lightning attack to take the southern city of Beersheba from the Ottomans, one hundred Aussies mounted up and recreated the historic charge, reaffirming the deep connection between Israel and one of its earliest allies.
The Battle for Beersheba
In addition to its Biblical importance, the city of Beersheba was a strategic key in the World War I battle for the Middle East. The battle for the city was a key part of the British-led campaign to knock the Ottoman Empire, Germany’s ally, out of the war.
Sitting aside one of the main routes from Egypt to Palestine, Beersheba contained water wells that were described in the Bible. These wells were a matter of life or death for the British army’s Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF), far from home and running on overextended supply lines. Its initiative had been faltering and the leadership had been passed on to a new commander: British General Edmund Allenby.

Though the strategic importance of the city was clear to Allenby, neither was the Biblical import lost on him. One of his first acts as commander was to issue a Bible to all of his soldiers. Historians have recorded how the British general was often found on his knees, deep in prayer, asking for direction from above.
The city was defended by Ottoman Fourth Army Troops who were heavily dug in. Artillery and machine-gun emplacements made any approach difficult. The terrain was flat and treeless, heavily favoring defense.

Bennett Attacks IDF Spokesman: ‘We Do Not Apologize for Killing Terrorists’

Minister of Education Naftali Bennett on Tuesday attacked the IDF Spokesman, Brigadier General Ronen Manelis, over his announcement following the explosion of a terror tunnel leading into Israel from the Gaza Street. Manelis announced that “there was no intention, at any stage, to harm this senior [Hamas] official or another,” referring to the eight terrorists who were killed and about a dozen injured under the rubble.
“We must not apologize for our success in eliminating terrorists,” Bennett tweeted. “These are terrorists who were digging a hellish tunnel into Israeli territory, designed to kill Israeli women and children.”
Bennett agreed with the spokesman, however, that “we are not looking to escalate the situation,” but noted that as a member of the cabinet who has been leading the effort to thwart the tunnels’ threat since the [2014 Gaza war], “I fully support the operation.”
