Christian Concern - Breaking News.

Council refuse lap dancing licence

Last night Bedford Council threw out an application made on behalf of the ‘Saints and Sinners’ nightclub to allow lap dancing to take place at its venue.

Local business owners and residents, supported by the Christian Legal Centre, argued that such a venue was not suitable in an area where there were schools, churches and homes. More than 1000 letters of objection were received by the Council in advance of the hearing.

This is a great result for the people of Bedford and we are very encouraged by the Council's decision. It is possible to successfully challenge lap dancing licences and Councils are increasingly aware of the real risks of allowing sex clubs to operate in city centres.

We would encourage anyone who wants to object to sex licence applications to contact us here >http://www.christianconcern.com/contact-us

BREAKING NEWS: Christian Concerns

Read the story
http://www.christianconcern.com/our-concerns/religious-freedom/gmc-medical-council-case-dr-richard-scott

Watch the ITV News report
on the Dr Scott caseThe GMC has decided to continue pursuing the case against Dr Richard Scott, the GP accused by a patient of sharing his faith in a consultation, despite the complainant not turning up to the hearing this week and showing an ‘unconditional disinclination to attend’.

Dr Scott was therefore not able to cross-examine the complainant on what was allegedly said between the two individuals in the consulting room, denying Dr Scott any meaningful justice.

The CLC called for the case to be ‘struck out’, but the GMC has, incredibly, decided to continue to pursue the case and it has now been adjourned so that attempts can be made to get the witness to attend.

British MP: 'Force Churches to Perform Same-Sex Unions or Close Them Down'
http://www.christianpost.com

A member of the British Parliament is urging the country’s government to ban Christian churches from performing marriages if they refuse to also perform same-sex unions.

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove, wrote a letter Aug. 21 to Prime Minister David Cameron saying, “As long as religious groups can refuse to preside over ceremonies for same-sex couples, there will be inequality.”

The 2004 Civil Partnership Act legalized same-sex unions in the United Kingdom but prevented couples from marrying in religious venues. Weatherley wrote that the law only acted as an “uneasy truce between those wishing to preserve the religious significance of marriage and those fighting for equality.”

Weatherley’s constituency has one of the highest numbers of same-sex households in the United Kingdom, which makes him “increasingly concerned about the inequality which exists between the unions of same-sex couples and those of opposite-sex couples in this country,” the MP wrote.

He said the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government’s proposed amendment to the 2010 Equality Act, which creates an “opt-in” system allowing places of worship to choose if they want to register same-sex ceremonies, would only create a “messy compromise.”

Weatherley said the law should instead compel churches to register civil partnerships. He suggested Cameron follow a precedent created by a set of laws compelling 11 Catholic adoption agencies to provide adoption services for same-sex couples.

“Such behavior is not be [sic] tolerated in other areas, such as adoption, after all,” he wrote.

The comment references how Catholic adoption agencies were forced to close their doors rather than be forced to go against their faith in letting gay couples adopt through them.

Weatherley added that until “we untangle” marriage and “religion in this country, we will struggle to find a fair arrangement.”

Although Weatherley’s proposal is a “minority view” it “could quickly become a main stream point of view,” warned Neil Addison, national director of the U.K.’s Thomas More Legal Centre.

Such a proposal could open the door for other places that allow same-sex marriages to impose similar regulations on churches.

According to Addison, when the United Kingdom legalized same-sex unions “those who said that Churches, Synagogues, Mosques, etc. would eventually be forced to perform same-sex marriages were ridiculed as being alarmist, but it is now a point of view that is becoming dangerously mainstream."

Weatherley’s comments have already angered certain religious leaders.

Brighton priest Fr Ray Blake accused Weatherley of ignoring the convictions of Christians, Jews and Muslims.

“The Church is a voluntary organization and if you belong to it then you abide by its rules,” said Bishop Conry, whose diocese encompasses Weatherley’s constituency, according to the Catholic Herald.

“The law in this country recognizes that there is no parity between civil partnerships and marriage. What he [Weatherley] wants is a change in the law because he is not in a position to tell the Church what to do,” he added.

Right to Know Campaign – Act Now
A parliamentary debate on the need for independent abortion counselling is expected to be held on Tuesday 6th September.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister David Cameron and Health Secretary Andrew Lansley indicated that they supported the idea of independent counselling. However, they appear to have buckled under pressure from the pro-abortion lobby and are no longer backing the amendment laid by Nadine Dorries and Frank Field to facilitate this.

This is the moment to act. We need to make the Government and MPs aware of how important this issue is and the level of public support for the amendment.

Please e-mail your MP, let them know about the debate and urge them to vote in favour of the amendment.

E-mail Your MP > Find on this link below
http://righttoknow.org.uk/what-can-i-do

Please also e-mail Prime Minister David Cameron at camerond@parliament.uk and Health Secretary Andrew Lansley at lansleya@parliament.uk

The amendment is being backed by the Right to Know Campaign, supported by Christian Concern. There has been a huge amount of media coverage on this vital issue. Here is a top selection with further stories below:

Re: VERY IMPORTANT CHRISTIAN CONCERN

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has changed its mind over how it will intervene in the four cases of discrimination against Christians that will be heard in Europe soon.

The change follows a pattern of apparent indecision in recent months.

The EHRC said in July that it would intervene on behalf of Nadia Eweida, Shirley Chaplin, Gary McFarlane and Lillian Ladele in the European Court and would suggest the need for ‘reasonable accommodations’ which “will help employers and others manage how they allow people to manifest their religion or belief.”

It also said that the British courts had got it wrong in these cases, stating in a press release that “Judges have interpreted the law too narrowly in religion or belief discrimination claims” and that the courts had given “insufficient” protection to those manifesting religious beliefs.

The announcement took many by surprise. It was greeted with approval by Christian groups but was strongly criticised by secular and homosexual rights campaign groups.

However, in a subsequent consultation document, the EHRC has said that it will now act to support Chaplin and Eweida (whose cases relate to the right to wear a cross) but will oppose Ladele and McFarlane (whose cases relate to providing certain services to homosexual couples), stating that the “domestic courts came to the correct conclusions” in these two cases.

Fears that academic conference will normalise paedophiliaPublished: August 18th, 2011 |
Sexual Orientation
An academic conference took place in the States this week organised by B4U-ACT, a specialist group of activists and mental health professionals.

The conference hosted a number of academics from universities including Harvard, the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Louisville, and the University of Illinois.

The subject of discussion was reportedly how individuals who are ‘attracted’ to children might help in revising the entry on paedophilia in the American Psychological Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

B4U-ACT feel that the current definition in the DSM, which is used by mental health professionals in the US and across the world for the classification of mental disorders, treats ‘minor-attracted’ persons in an “inaccurate” and “misleading” way.

The organisation views paedophilia as simply another sexual orientation and want to get rid of the “stigma” associated with it.

Their website states: “No one chooses to be emotionally and sexually attracted to children or adolescents. The cause is unknown; in fact, the development of attraction to adults is not understood.”

The group also disapproves of treatment which aims to change attraction to children or adolescents.

Speaking to LifeSiteNews, Professor of Law Judith Reisman warned against the aims of the conference:

“I first met up with what I had come to call ‘The Academic Paedophile Lobby’ in 1977 at The British Psychological Society Conference on Love and Attraction, Swansea, Wales.”

The Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice is consulting on whether to relax the rules on advertising abortion services, which would enable commercial abortion providers to advertise on television for the first time.

Respond to this consultation >

Doing so will help stop abortion providers from encouraging vulnerable women to have abortions.

BREAKING NEWS

Palm Cross Christian suspended from work

Electrician Colin Atkinson, who won the right to keep displaying a palm cross in his work van in April, has now been suspended from work.

Following a successful campaign by Christian Concern, Colin’s employers initially allowed him to return to his job and display his cross. Yet he has suffered further harassment; his van was taken away from him and he was moved to an office 16 miles away. Colin lodged a grievance and has now been suspended pending further investigation.

Please pray for Colin and the Christian Legal Centre as we defend his right to manifest his religious beliefs.

Winds of Change at Equality Commission

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has claimed that Christians should be given more freedom to follow their beliefs in the workplace, saying that: “The way existing human rights and equality law has been interpreted by judges is insufficient to protect freedom of religion or belief.”

The EHRC is seeking to intervene in four religious discrimination cases soon to appear before the European Court of Human Rights. The Christian Legal Centre is representing clients in two of those cases – Gary McFarlane and Shirley Chaplin.

The move has surprised many who are used to the Commission acting against Christians and religious freedoms. We wait to see the details of their intervention.

The Prime Minister will have to respond to the European Court on behalf of the Government regarding these cases.

Please write to the PM and urge him to stand for freedom of belief in this nation.

You can contact the PM at 10 Downing Street, London, SW1A 2AA or e-mail him here.

Please urge him to support Gary McFarlane and Shirley Chaplin. Please emphasise that reasonable accommodation should be made for religious beliefs and that Christians should not lose their jobs due to their Christian sexual ethics; that Christians should not be barred from public life just because they don’t want to promote the practice of homosexuality against their religious conscience; and that Christians should be able to wear a cross at work without being singled out.

CLC objects to sex club licence in Oxford

Today the Christian Legal Centre, along with other objectors including St Ebbe’s Church, will ask Oxford City Council not to grant a sexual entertainment licence to a club called Coven II. The club is situated on one of the main roads running into Oxford City Centre, close to residential areas, a higher education college and the Oxford University Training Corps, making it a highly unsuitable area for a sex club.
This is the second application for a sex club licence in Oxford in the space of eight months.

Equality Commission speaks out against Christians

Trevor Phillips, the head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, has commented on religious discrimination in the UK. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, Mr Phillips singled out evangelical Christians for criticism, suggesting that they were not integrating as well as Muslims were.

He said he felt that Christians were choosing to fight over the issue of sexual orientation and seeking to gain political power, and that the ‘old time religion’ of Afro-Caribbean immigrant communities in the UK was incompatible with modern British society and would prevent integration.

Baroness Cox introduced a new Bill in the House of Lords this week which is intended to outlaw the use of sharia law where it conflicts with English law. The Bill has arisen over concerns about the discrimination suffered by [color:3bbe=#000]Muslim women under the sharia system. The Bill proposes to protect women by stopping discriminatory rulings that are contrary to UK law and ensuring that sharia law does not appear to have jurisdiction where it does not.

The Bill is being supported by the Equal and Free Campaign, backed by Christian Concern and many other groups.

Please contact a member of the House of Lords and urge them to support Baroness Cox’s Bill. 1000 people contacted various members of the House of Lords in the first 24 hours of launch. Let’s make it 100,000!

BREAKING NEWS
European Court demands answers from Government

Recent rulings against Christians have prompted the European Court of Human Rights to order the Government to make a formal statement on whether they believe that the rights of Christians are being infringed.
Currently, four Christian cases are being taken to Europe. These include two Christian Legal Centre cases, involving Shirley Chaplin, a nurse who was banned from working on wards for wearing a cross, and Gary McFarlane, a counsellor who was sacked by his employer for saying that he would not give sex therapy to homosexual couples.
Andrea Minichiello Williams, CEO of the Christian Legal Centre, said: "We cannot contemplate losing these cases. Please support us. This is how, by God's grace, we are going to put things right."

UK faces shortage of Foster Parents
The Evening Standard reported this week that London faces a shortage of foster carers (which is a situation reflected nationally). Almost 2,000 foster carers are needed in London as the number of children taken into care continues to rise.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Christians to step forward and apply to take vulnerable young people into their homes. Of course, it is not always easy to do so, as ‘equality and diversity’ policies can exclude those with Christian beliefs on sexual ethics from being accepted. However, we would encourage Christian parents to apply to foster regardless of the increasing difficulties. Christian parents have so much to offer to those who have been taken into care.

MPs have voted 67-61 in favour of a ‘Ten Minute Rule’ Bill introduced by Conservative MP Nadine Dorries, which seeks to ensure that sex education for girls in schools includes ‘information and advice on the benefits of abstinence from sexual activity’.

The Bill comes in light of high teenage pregnancy rates (the UK has the highest in Western Europe) and a high STD rate, and amidst concerns that the sexualisation of Britain’s young people has been profoundly damaging to their mental and sexual health.

BREAKING NEWS
A Christian employee, Colin Atkinson, who refused to remove a Palm Cross from the dashboard of his Housing Association vehicle is rejoicing this Easter Sunday, after threats of the sack have been lifted, and his employers have agreed to allow him to continue to keep the cross he has displayed for 15 years, in the cockpit of his van.

Happy Easter! Jesus Christ is risen!
Hope for our communities
Our focus this week is on reaching out in compassion to help those in our society who are particularly vulnerable. This short video presents the work of the work of a South London church in serving those who are homeless and seeking to bring them the good news about Jesus Christ.

Watch the video (4 mins 10 secs)
Response ideas
•Give thanks for the thousands of ministries across the country that seek to serve the needy and vulnerable. Pray that through them many people might come to experience God's love in the present and come to find eternal security in Jesus Christ.
•Could you or church provide care, food, shelter, new skills or advice for those who are homeless? What about those facing addictions or those in prison?
•Are there refugees, asylum seekers, or those from other countries studying or working locally that your church could reach out to? Perhaps you could offer informal english classes or offer hospitality or special welcome events at your church?
•Could you train as a crisis pregnancy counsellor, perhaps through an organisation such as LIFE or CareConfidential? Could your church provide practical support and advice for those struggling in bringing up children, or in their marriage or relationship?
•Are there elderly or disabled people in your church or community that you could visit, take out on trips or to whom you could offer hospitality?
Hope for our country
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali continues his series of short reflections on verses from John's gospel. On this, Easter Sunday, he comments on John 11:25-26.

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?'" (John 11:25-26, ESV)

Watch the video (2 mins 45 secs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVPiUxHHEhI

Prayer ideas:
•Give thanks for the wonderful news that Jesus has defeated death, being raised to new life by His Father and now exalted to His Father's right hand. Praise God that one day Jesus will come in glory, that every knee shall bow and that the whole creation will be restored and transformed, abounding in love and justice and free from all suffering. Thank God that already we see this transforming power breaking in to our world in and through the life of His church.
•Ask that this Easter, many people may hear of the life-giving power of Jesus and come to place their trust in Him, before He comes to judge the world. Pray that His church may have renewed confidence to proclaim the life-transforming message of His lordship at every level of society - to individuals, communities and our nation.

Today is Good Friday. We are humbled to remember that Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price in order to bring life and liberty to others and we rejoice to follow Him. Sadly, our society seems increasingly ignorant and suspicious of Him. It is becoming more and more difficult to live and speak for Him, without facing the threat of exclusion, as we have recently and painfully experienced. And our cases are just the tip of the iceberg. This trend has consequence not only for Christians but for society as a whole.

We are pleased that our stories seem to have acted as something of a wake-up call and attracted widespread support, both inside and outside the Christian community, from those who are concerned at the direction in which our society is headed. The 'Equalities and Conscience' Petition has been launched to give people the opportunity to highlight their concern over these issues.

It has already attracted support from about 17,000 people. However, if everyone on this email list collected just 5 additional signatures, we would immediately have another 150,000 names on the petition. Remember that 100,000 should secure a debate on the issue in Parliament.

So, we are asking you, over this Easter weekend, as part of our united testimony to the fact that Jesus Christ has been and continues to be good news for our nation, to find five people in your church or community who would sign this petition.

Van driver Colin Atkinson is facing a possible disciplinary hearing for continuing to discretely display a small palm cross in his van, which he has been displaying for 15 years. His employers at Wakefield District Housing have affirmed a complaint that his cross may be offensive.

Every Friday Christian Concern will bring you stories of fundamental significance to Christians and our Nation. To equip you to pray and act. To put the hope of Christ at the centre of our Nation.

Please visit our website at: www.christianconcern.com

Christian Concern is pleased to be leading the Not Ashamed initiative.

Launch of “Love Jos” Campaign
The Love Jos Campaign has been launched this week by Christians in the UK to encourage others to engage with the situation in Jos and its surrounding areas in Nigeria.

Christian Concern is fully backing the campaign, which has arisen as a response to the systematic and ongoing violence and persecution against Christians in Nigeria by Islamic fundamentalists.

In one episode last year extremists attacked Dogo-Nahawa, leaving over 500 Christians brutally murdered. Many were decapitated, scalped and had their hands and feet cut off.

Regular attacks started happening in Nigeria following the implementation of sharia law in twelve of the northern Nigerian states from 1999 onwards and have been recently increasing in frequency.

Please visit the campaign website here to join the mailing list >

If you would like to donate to Love Jos in order to help the victims of these atrocities then please donate here and specify "Love Jos".

Finally, a very hard hitting documentary has been produced by the campaign called “Plateau – the Final Frontier”.

You can watch the promo here and purchase the film for £10 by contacting support@lovejos.org.uk. Please note that the documentary contains highly graphic scenes.

Not Ashamed of Easter
We have released two new videos in the Not Ashamed Lent series.

Local radio presenter, Jon Bellamy, helps us to think about Christian engagement with the media and Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali continues his short reflections on passages from John's gospel. Please continue to support the campaign in the run up to Easter.

Jesus Christ – good news for our nation
News from Not Ashamed in the run up to Easter ...
•Hope for our communities: School governor, Nina Fry, helps us to think about Christian engagement with schools.
•Hope for our country: Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali continues his short reflections on passages from John's gospel.
•Not Ashamed this Easter: Ideas for supporting Not Ashamed in the approach to Easter.
Hope for our communities
Our focus this week is education. In this very short video (c. 2 minutes) Nina Fry explains how and why she has become a school governor.

Watch the video (2 mins 20 secs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-O3i6J744o

Response ideas
•Give thanks to God for those Christians who serve in schools - especially as teachers, governors and volunteers. Ask God to grant them the grace, wisdom, courage and strength that they need to teach truthfully and be godly models to the young people in their care. Pray also for opportunities to speak about Jesus.
•Does someone at church already serve as a teacher or school governor? Why not ask them for some prayer points and pray for them and local schools at a church meeting? Or ask some of the young people in your church how to pray for their school?
•Could you become a school governor or offer to assist children with their reading? Many schools are looking for such volunteers.
•Perhaps you or your church could offer to lead school assemblies, run an after school club or help organise a Christian union group in a local school?
•If you're a parent or governor, it's worth finding out what is being taught in local schools - especially in assemblies, religious education classes and in Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) programmes. The material used in some schools has shocked many parents and schools are often confused about exactly what has to be taught in these subject areas. It's also important to find out what external groups (such as Stonewall) visit the school and what they teach. Parents do have rights to remove their children from certain classes.
Hope for our country
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali continues his series of short reflections on verses from John's gospel. This week he comments on John 16:12 - 14:

I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (John 16:12 - 14 - ESV).

Watch the video (3 minutes)

Prayer ideas:
•Give thanks for God's gift of His Spirit to His people through Jesus.
•Pray that over Easter, God's Spirit may be at work teaching Christians more about Jesus and making them more like Him.
•Ask God that this Easter His Spirit may bring many people to believe in Jesus for first time, bringing glory to Him.

Not Ashamed this Easter
•Please think and pray about how you can use the Easter season to bring the message of hope in Jesus Christ to those known to you at Easter? There are many resources available to help including booklets of varying styles and lengths -
here's just one example.•If you're planning an outdoor service, procession with the cross or another act of public testimony in your local area at Easter, why not use the Not Ashamed symbol?
•Why not organise a 'prayer for our nation' event in the run up to Easter?

Action points:
•Visit the Not Ashamed shop to purchase 'Not Ashamed' items in readiness for Easter

•Download the NEW Not Ashamed Easter email signature

•Find out more about ‘Not Ashamed’

•Order an updated church pack

31st March 2011

ACTION ALERT

Right to Know Campaign

This afternoon, Nadine Dorries MP and Rt Hon. Frank Field MP have laid an amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill that will guarantee that women considering abortion have access to independent information and advice.

Crucially, private abortion providers will be barred from providing the counselling. It is likely that when women have access to better information, fewer will choose to proceed to abortion.

We ask you to support the Right to Know campaign that has been launched to encourage public support for the amendment.

This amendment needs the support of MPs - please take action as soon as possible:

•Contact your MP – there is an online facility on the Right to Know website to allow you to do this quickly and easily.
•Link to the Campaign video on Youtube via email and Facebook and encourage others to watch it.
•‘Like’ the Right to Know Facebook page.
•Tell as many people as possible about the campaign and urge them to support it.
Thank you for your support.

Please visit the website here to find out more.
