THE TROUBLE WITH THE "50/50 PLAN"

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were
yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

When two people get married, they have expectations of how the relationship should work. Often, the unspoken assumption is that "My spouse will meet me halfway." Sometimes it's called "The 50/50 Plan." When the husband and wife operate on this pattern, it's easy for it to spread to other members of the family.

The "50/50 Plan" says, "You do your part, and I'll do mine." This concept sounds logical, but families who use it are destined for disappointment.

Among the problems with "The 50/50 Plan" is that giving is based on merit and performance. We focus more on what the other person is giving than on what we are doing. Love is withheld until the other person meets our expectations. Since this way of measuring out our love is subjective, the motivation for our actions is based merely on how we feel.

It's impossible to ever know if a person has ever met you halfway. As Thomas Fuller said, "Each horse thinks his pack is heaviest."

Early in our marriage we tried this plan. I would give affection to Barbara only when I felt she had earned it by keeping the house running smoothly. Barbara would show me affection and praise only when I would hold up my end by getting home on time, keeping the house in a reasonable state of repair, or working in her garden.

Contrast this with the type of love God shows for us. You might say that, no matter what we do, He gives us 100 percent. As Romans 5:8 shows, He gives us love even when we don't deserve it.

I propose that couples adopt "The 100/100 Plan" in marriage.  Under this plan, each person gives 100 percent no matter what the other person does.

I pray that God's spirit of unmerited giving will permeate the heart of each member of your family.

Divine Love
  While many friendships,
like footprints on the sea shore,
come and all too soon are gone,
God's love is like the timeless sea,
  though ever changing
  it still remains the same.
Like the pulse beat of eternal time,
  with infinite patience
  and untiring regularity,
  it gives itself unendingly.

What the dew is to the flower,
Gentle words are to the soul,
And a blessing to the giver,
And so dear to the receiver
We should never withhold.
Gentle words, kindly spoken,
Often soothe the troubled mind,
While links of love are broken
By words that are unkind.
Then O, thou gentle Spirit,
My constant Guardian be,
"Do to others," be my motto,
"As I'd have them do to me."

An old Shaker song called Gentle Words. 1867

Computer's Down
What Was Christmas For?

What was Christmas truly for, as on the Season we close that door?
As a New Year for all starts, and the Christmas Season now departs.
Does the Christmas spirit depart, from each and every human heart?
As Christmas trim is tucked away, will the spirit in some hearts stay?

Was Christmas truly meant for this, for once a year to change gifts?
Especially within the hearts of us, who in The Savior place our trust?
Shouldn’t Christmas that we know, be His Light in us for all to show,
The Truth and life we have in Him, who came to dwell forever within?

Should not Christmas be a song, we sing in our hearts all year long?
As in our hearts we joyfully sing, to Jesus Christ, our Lord and King.
A song which should never leave, the heart of those who do believe,
Saved by Grace from this world, with that Christmas Song to herald.

A song we sing all year through, as The Spirit moves in me and you,
To be a light men need each day, not just thought of Christmas day,
Song and light, throughout the year, which every man needs to hear,
This, so men may see their need, that God’s message they will heed.

Some men desire Christmas in July, but, did you ever question why?
A time when gifts aren’t bought at all; could it be music to their soul?
Maybe the songs that they heard, moved their hearts to God’s Word,
With a message, when not ignored, could draw any soul to The Lord.

Watching What You Say--Watching What You Do
There's a wide-eyed little youngster who believes
you're always right;
And his ears are always open, as he watches day and
night;
You are setting an example every day in all you do,
For the little one who's watching wants to grow up just
like you!

A Day To Remember

A day to remember a special event, when by God, The Savior was sent,
To a wayward peoples below, of whom, The Lord, they would not know,
The Savior was sent for every Jew, a peoples whom The Lord foreknew,
Yet, the people would receive Him not, giving that nation a spiritual blot.
Yet, Christ was indeed Israel’s Savior, the One and Only Eternal Creator,
Sent as God’s Peace and Salvation, unto Messiah’s only chosen nation,
Messiah was sent down for His elect, yet, their Savior, men would reject,
By God’s very own, Christ was denied; and later by them to be crucified.
The rejection by Israel of Christ Jesus, would soon after benefit all of us,
As Messiah would turn to every nation, in doing so, fulfill His Revelation,
Just as the angels did herald, Good News and great joy, to all the world,
God’s Light was sent into every nation, as Christ is the world’s Salvation.
Today friend, does the world remember, Christ, during all of December?
Do people celebrate God’s Gift to all, or is Christ just something small?
Do we today have New Holiday cause, replacing God with Santa Claus?
Replacing the manger with a tree, with no thought at all towards Calvary!
Haven’t we learned from Israel’s mistake, or will many today still forsake,
A Savior, Who came in a humble way, to bring all Salvation, even today,
In spite of men’s failures in the past, Messiah offers all, salvation to last,
So today, accept God’s Gift of Christ, and you shall receive Eternal Life.

Below is John Piper’s latest poem,

Teaching As Tender Rain
A Meditation on
Deuteronomy 32:2–3

Like gentle rain it falls,
Day after day, unbroken, soft,
Unlike the thrashing whip
Of myriad liquid buckshot, swung
At angles like an ax
Against the tender daffodils.
No thunder, lightning, nor
A change, or slightest swing of wind.
Straight down it falls, each drop
A perfect plumb from heaven’s hand,
As if infinite care
We’re being taken there, for how
It falls and where it lands,
Until the middle of the night.

Then silence, moist, and deep,
And steeping tiny roots in brown
Life-giving broth, and by
Some holy spell transforming soil
Into a blade of grass,
Into a blade of greenest green.
And in the cloudless day—
Who knows if from the finished rain,
Or is it dew?—bright drops
Distilling all the broad blue sky
Ten thousand times into
As many globes, and every one
Encompassing the Name,
And shining out the glory, and
The greatness of our God.

A Candle in the Darkness

Sometimes I think my life insignificant
  And each deed quite small,
But a candle in the darkness
Is seen by the eyes of all.

Help me to glow brightly enough
  So everyone can see
God is Light and God is Love
And God is living in me.

POEM
Looking For Jesus

I find my LORD in the Bible

    Wherever I chance to look,

HE is the theme of the Bible

    The center and heart of the Book;

HE is the Rose of Sharon,

     HE is the Lily fair,

Wherever I open my Bible

The LORD of the Book is there.

HE, at the Book's beginning,

Gave to the earth its form,

HE is the Ark of shelter

Bearing the brunt of the storm,

The Burning Bush of the desert,

     The budding of Aaron's Rod,

Wherever I look in the Bible

I see the Son of God.

The Ram upon Mt. Moriah,

The Ladder from earth to sky,

The Scarlet Cord in the window,

     And the Serpent lifted high,

The Smitten Rock in the desert,

The Shepherd with staff and crook,

The face of my Lord I discover

     Wherever I open the Book.

HE is the Seed of the Woman,

     The Savior Virgin-born;

HE is the Son of David,

     Whom men rejected with scorn,

HIS garments of grace and beauty

     The stately Aaron deck,

Yet HE is the Priest forever,

     For HE is Melchizedek.

LORD of eternal glory

    Whom John, the Apostle saw;

Light of the Golden City,

     Lamb without spot or flaw,

Bridegroom coming at midnight,

     For whom the Virgins look.

Wherever I open my Bible,

I find my LORD in the Book.

Walking the Dog

Reportedly, a woman was flying from Seattle to San
Francisco. Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to
Sacramento along the way.

The flight attendant explained that there would be a
delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the
aircraft, the plane would re-board in 50 minutes.
Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was
blind.

A man had noticed her as he walked by and could tell
the lady was blind because her guide dog lay quietly
underneath the seats in front of her throughout the
entire flight. He could also tell she had flown this
flight before because the pilot approached her, and
calling her by name, said, "Kathy, we are in Sacramento
for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and
stretch your legs?"

The blind lady said, "No thanks, but maybe Buddy would
like to stretch his legs."

All of the people in the gate area came to a complete
stand still when they looked up and saw the pilot walk
off the plane with a guide dog for the blind. Even
worse, the pilot was wearing sunglasses!

Remember: Things are not always the way that they
appear.

Reaching Upwards

Like the trees of the forest,
  may you find nourishment
  in rain as well as sunshine;
Bend with the winds of misfortune
  without breaking;
  Give of yourself to others
  to provide shade from
  the blistering heat;
  Grow old gracefully and not
  become rigid or unbending;
  And above all--
  may you keep reaching upwards
  towards heaven and to God.

Yes to Life

      My words say
        “Yes” to life,
      But what I don’t do
      often says the opposite.
      Will choice,
      or fear,
      or fate,
      or chance,
      or indecision,
      or doing nothing,
      or somebody else,
      or what others think,
or my need for their approval
      determine my destiny--
      or will I?

Garden of My Heart

  If every thought
  I had of you
  was a rose, and
  every rose a word,
  I would keep
  picking endless roses
  from the garden
  of my heart,
  And speak them
  all to you.

Words

    Words spoken
    may soon pass away
    and forgotten be,
    But when spoken
    in love and kindness,
    are like beautiful flowers,
    and even though
    they fade and die
    from conscious memory,
    their fragrance lives on
    embedded in the
    deeper mind --
    forever.

 Friendship

  Whether by
  strange coincidence
  or divine guidance;
in the course of our life
  we cross paths with
  many people.

  Some move towards us,
  others move away.
  Some we choose to remember,
  others to forget.

  But with a special few,
we seem to have no choice,
for each has made an impact
  on the other, and their
  memory will live on forever.

  These people we call friends.
You, to me, are such a one.

Dear Father,
please teach me how,
to lay aside "myself",
and before Thee only, bow!
Lord as I arise,
each dawning of the morn,
I have such good intentions,
But then the flesh is born.

It rises up in me,
from where I do not know,
raising its ugly head,
and wants to run the show!
Have mercy on Me Lord,
teach me to abide,
My heart cries out
I need more of You inside.

I need to sit myself down,
and pray and meditate,
Worship You Oh Lord,
Search Your Heavenly Gates.
I need to spend the time
with You each glorious day,
Let my soul rejoice,
Lift up my voice and pray.

Let me make the time,
and lay myself aside,
Remove my desires
and in Christ alone, abide.
Purify me Lord,
Let my cup overflow,
Fill me up with Jesus,
Only then I know I'll grow.

Thank you for your patience Father,
Your unconditional Love,
You give me hope each day,
I know its born from above.
There is no other way,
To be faithful and true,
But to put "myself" aside,
And get busy serving You!

A Baby Girl

"She loves you!" These words, spoken by an unknown
aboriginal father in a Melbourne (Australia)
restaurant, gave Australian author, Alan Marshall, new
purpose in living.

Marshall had been playing with the baby who, resting on
her father's shoulder, was facing him across the back
of an alcove seat. As he waggled his fingers to imitate
a butterfly, the baby's dark eyes sparkled with joy,
and she bounced excitedly.

The father glanced over his shoulder at Marshall,
smiled, and spoke the words that were to mean so much
to him, "She loves you!"

A young man crippled with polio and cramped by a sense
of inferiority, Marshall was warmed and inspired by
their meaning, for they began to show him the
excellence of love. Recalling the incident years later
in his book, "This Is the Grass," he wrote, "I felt I
wanted to write books that meant something."

Unsung Songs

  How many songs never sung,
  poems never written,
  pictures never painted,
  risks never taken,
  bridges never crossed,
  romantic words never spoken,
all locked inside a lonely heart--
  the prison of another's making--
  are left unexpressed
  because somebody
  shamed us, abandoned us,
  or perhaps silenced us
  with a cruel word,
  a thoughtless deed,
  and said or just implied
  we were not good enough?
  And tragically
  we believed them--
so let this be the moment
  we choose to believe them
no more ... and sing, sing, sing.

By way of interest, I was motivated to write this poem
because a well-meaning friend once told me how badly
one of my poems was written! It happened to be this
one: "Rainbows" at:

Wherever You go, Lord
Grant that I may go too
For my greatest desire
Is to be always with You

If You travel the mountains
Let me climb them by your side
If You sail seas and oceans
Let me remain through each tide

If into the heavens You fly
Lord, may I reach this great height
If into the dark valleys You go
Lord, remain always in my sight

Through joy and through tears
Through darkness and light
Grant that I may be with You
Through each day and each night

For who knows me like You do?
Who loves me with a love so sweet?
Who gives everything to me
As You have since we did meet?

To the Love and Life You give
Nothing will ever compare
So my every moment with You
Lord, I do long to share

Glorious it is to be Your daughter
Sweet to be one whom You love
You share with me every moment now
Just as You will when I live Above

Rejoice in Your Name I will always
Sing to you sweet songs of praise
How can I contain my joy for Jesus?
His love continually does amaze

So wherever You go, dear Lord
Please grant that I may go too
For my greatest desire is
To be always with You

Life

  I love the gift
  of life, dear God,
  with all its
  beauty everywhere:
  Blue skies,
  white fluffy clouds,
  green trees,
  open meadows,
  beautiful flowers,
  all creatures
  great and small,
  majestic mountains,
  the restless timeless sea--
  But most of all
  I love dear friends,
  and if you will,
  please give to me
  a greater love for You--
  my dearest Friend of all.

This is a lovely Poem things do go better with Friends
POEM
GOD knew how much I needed
Companionship and cheer
Friends I could depend on
Whose thoughts are always near.
He knew I needed someone kind
To lend a helping hand
Someone to gladly take the time
To care and understand.
GOD knew I needed someone
To share each happy day
To be a source of courage
When trouble comes my way.
Someone who is always true
Whether near or far apart
Friendships I can always have
And treasure in my heart.
I send this card to you today

You are my very best friend
And I had to tell you so.

Our Emmanuel

His birth in the manger was only the start
The crib lies empty today
He brought joy to all the earth
But He knew He could not stay

As He lay there in swaddling clothes
The shepherds were declaring His birth
Telling the world that had waited so long
That the Savior has come to earth

Wise men would come from afar
As gifts for the child they would bring
But a far greater gift our EMMANUEL
Throughout the ages would ring

Let us return to that lowly manger
And rejoice because of His birth
We now have hope of life everlasting
Because God sent His Son to earth

Luke 2:11 (KJV)
For unto you is born this day
In the city of David a Saviour,
Which is Christ the Lord.
May Jesus be your joy,
Your hope, your song
And may this Christmas
And each day of the new year
Be directed by His
Guiding hand of love!

Re: POEMS & THOuGHTS SHARING

Twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate. Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air. They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there. They were filled with such joy; they didn't know what to say. They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.

“Where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.

“This is heaven" declared a small boy. "We’re spending Christmas at God's house”. When what to their wondering eyes did appear, but Jesus, their Savior, the children gathered near. He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same. Then He opened His arms and He called them by name. And in that moment was joy that only heaven can bring as those children all flew into the arms of their King and lingered in the warmth of His embrace. One small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face. And as if He could read all the questions she had He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad.

“Then He looked down on earth, the world far below He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe, then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand, “Let My power and presence re-enter this land! “May this country be delivered from the hands of fools” “I’m taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools! “Then He and the children stood up without a sound.

“Come now my children let me show you around. “Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran. All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can. And I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight, “in the midst of this darkness,” I AM STILL THE LIGHT."

Touch of Wonder

Touch of Wonder

By Arthur Gordon

When I was about 13 and my brother 10, our father
promised to take us to the circus. But then at
lunchtime there was a phone call--some urgent business
that required his attention downtown--and we braced
ourselves for disappointment. But then we heard him
say, "No, I won't be able to come down. It's going to
have to wait."

He came back to the table and mother smiled, "The
circus keeps coming back, you know."

"I know," he said, "but childhood doesn't."

After all these years I remember that moment. And I
knew from the sudden glow of warmth that no kindness is
ever really wasted or completely lost. Because the only
thing you take with you to heaven is your family.

*******

Today's Thought: "There is more to life than increasing
its speed."

Re: POEMS & THOuGHTS SHARING

There is no Christmas without Jesus,
He sends me His gift each day.
I tell Him how much I love Him,
For the love and joy He sends my way.

I see the pretty trees and lights glowing bright,
I think of my dear Saviour for He is my Light,
Jesus is Christmas, I'll bow to Him and pray,
And give Him many thanks for just another day.

As we celebrate this Christmas season,
Do share the Gift of God's Love with everyone,
It's not only about glowing lights, gifts, and fun,
It's all about Jesus, God's precious Son.

Jesus Sweet Jesus so meek and mild,
You came to Earth as Mary's own child,
You wrapped the world in the greatest Love,
In giving the best gift, God sent from Above.

God gave The Greatest Gift that day,
He sent His Son to light our way.
No room in the inn, He was born in the stall,
Please remember always, Jesus gave all.

I see the trees and sparkling lights,
With gifts all wrapped for everyone,
Christmas brings such a time of joy,
As we celebrate again Mary's baby boy.

The Shepherd’s and Wisemen came from afar,
To see precious Jesus Our greatest gift,
Late in the midnight they followed the star,
Now new life begins, Oh what a joy You are!

Jesus I love You, You are my Salvation.
You came to Earth to save the lost,
You gave Your life to die for me,
I will love and Praise You for all Eternity.

The Babe in the manger the Saviour of men,
Still rules the world for those lost in sin,
Today Jesus still calls for all to come in,
Come into the arms of Jesus your Friend.

Jesus I thank You for Your Special Birth,
You left Heaven's best to come to Earth,
You became our Precious Lord and King.
Happy Birthday Jesus while the angels sing.

I'm sending You my Christmas blessing,
To show You love as we stay in touch.
I pray Your Christmas will be merry,
Because I love You, Oh so very much.

May the Lord Bless and Watch over you
And your loved ones this CHRISTmas
And may He prosper and bless the work
Of your hands in the New Year!

Psalm 9:2 (KJV)
I will be glad and rejoice in thee:
I will sing praise to thy name,
O thou most High.
